Fantasy, cosplay and steampunk festival at Mesola Castle
The Minotaur Festival is the event dedicated to the fantasy, gothic, dark, medieval, steampunk, and comic book world that animates the Mesola Castle, in the Municipality of Mesola, province of Ferrara, in Emilia-Romagna. Organized by the association CosplayAndNerd, the event chooses one of the most fascinating Este summer residences in the area as its setting: the ancient hunting lodge commissioned by the Este family, today the cultural heart of the Po Delta, which for a weekend transforms into an imaginary world populated by characters, creatures, and atmospheres of yesteryear.
The beating heart of the event is the Cosplay Contest, the competition that awards the best costumes in the comics, fantasy, medieval, gothic, steampunk, and dark categories. Participants register on-site, undergo pre-judging by the jury, and perform on stage before the awards ceremony. There are also opportunities for meet & greets with cosplayers and guest artists, a chance to get to know the stars of the Italian nerd scene up close, chat, and take home a souvenir photo.
Along the festival route, there are themed markets with stands offering crafts, accessories, comics, and gothic, fantasy, and steampunk-themed curiosities. Ample space is dedicated to live role-playing games and board games, with sessions guided by expert masters designed for both veterans and curious newcomers. The program is completed by live concerts, shows, artistic performances, creative workshops, and in-depth talks on fantasy themes.
The strength of the Minotaur Festival lies in the fusion of the playful dimension with the evocative setting: the 16th-century castle walls provide a natural backdrop for a fantasy universe, offering visitors of all ages an immersive experience that blends the historical authenticity of the province of Ferrara with the energy of pop culture. All experiences organized by CosplayAndNerd have free admission, making the event accessible to families, enthusiasts, and the simply curious.
Mesola is located in the northeasternmost tip of Emilia-Romagna, within the Po Delta Park, an area recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Castle, built at the end of the 16th century at the behest of Duke Alfonso II d'Este, is the town's symbolic monument and offers the event an exceptional backdrop, just a short walk from the Mesola Woods and the valleys that characterize this corner of the province of Ferrara.
The second edition was held at Mesola Castle on April 18 and 19, 2026. Saturday's program started at 4:00 PM with the opening, followed by a panel on the castle's history, a steampunk talk by Mr. Bolpi, a presentation of Lisa Lambertini's new book, and a live concert by DARIDEL. On Sunday, after the 10:00 AM opening, there was time for meet & greets, a steampunk workshop, talks with Mariano dei Rossi (TomareLab) and the jury, culminating in the Cosplay Contest EveryPiLFun at 4:00 PM and a live performance by K.J. Cosplay.
