The many faces of culture, music, performance, and sport in Meta
MetaMorfosi Estive – The many faces of culture, music, performance, and sport is the summer program of the Municipality of Meta, a small coastal town in the Province of Naples overlooking the Gulf, in the heart of the Sorrento Peninsula, Campania. The festival was born with a simple yet ambitious idea: rather than concentrating everything into a single evening, it spreads a series of diverse events throughout the summer—a book launch, a current affairs talk, a performance, a sporting moment—so that the town changes its face every week. Hence the wordplay in the title, which combines the town's name with the concept of metamorphosis.
The program is promoted by the municipal administration, led by Mayor Giuseppe Tito and the Councilor for Culture and Entertainment Raffaele Mormile, under the motto A Summer of Emotions. The editorial choice favors quality over quantity: few events, but carefully curated and entrusted to nationally recognized authors, companies, and guests. The audience is not just made up of vacationers: the festival explicitly aims to be an opportunity for growth, discussion, and sharing for the local community and the entire Peninsula.
The most spectacular moment of the 2026 edition took place on July 15th in the Town Hall atrium, transformed for one night into a living art gallery. The Compagnia Ludovica Rambelli Teatro, famous for bringing the technique of Tableaux Vivants across Europe, reproduced twenty-three masterpieces by Luca Giordano, one of the greatest Neapolitan painters of all time, a master of tenebrism and golden light. Six performers — Elena Fattorusso, Andrea Fersula, Chiara Kija, Rocco Giordano, Maria Giovanna La Greca, and Fiorenzo Madonna — recreated works such as Prometheus, Lucretia, The Deposition of Christ, The Crucifixion of Saint Peter, The Penitent Magdalene, and Saint Michael the Archangel using only their bodies, light, and a few drapes. The performance, repeated in two sessions to accommodate more spectators, was curated by maestro Paolo Scibilia, president of the Sorrento Concert Society, and directed by Dora De Maio.
Alongside theater, the festival dedicates ample space to the written word. On June 26th, the Camillo Paturzo Multipurpose Center hosted the presentation of the volume Chiaroscuri della memoria. Volti, storie e immagini della penisola sorrentina by Giovanni Gugg and Anna Gentile (Franco Di Mauro Editore), a visual journey into the identity of the territory. On July 22nd, the Villa Comunale, packed to capacity, welcomed an encounter with Francesca Albanese regarding her book La luce del risveglio, an event included in the International Festival of Journalism and Investigative Books.
Meta is the gateway to the Sorrento Peninsula: it features a wide, sandy beach—a rarity on this rocky coast—a historic center dominated by the Basilica of Santa Maria del Lauro, and a location that makes it an ideal base for reaching Sorrento, Positano, Pompeii, or Capri. Participating in MetaMorfosi Estive means experiencing the town as the locals do: on summer evenings, when the air cools down and the squares fill up. It is also a way to discover a cultural program that, despite being in a town of only a few thousand inhabitants, manages to stage nationally renowned companies and authors.
The program is announced event by event throughout the season via the official channels of the Municipality of Meta and the local press of the Sorrento Peninsula. Those planning a stay in the area between June and the end of summer should check for updates before leaving: many events have limited seating and, as the evenings already held have shown, they sell out quickly.
Promoted by the Municipality of Meta with Mayor Giuseppe Tito and the Councilor for Culture and Entertainment Raffaele Mormile, the 2026 edition confirms the formula of the widespread festival: events distributed throughout the summer, in different parts of the town, alternating between books, current affairs meetings, and live performances.
The most anticipated moment was the Tableaux Vivants performance on July 15th, where twenty-three masterpieces by Luca Giordano were recreated live by the Compagnia Ludovica Rambelli Teatro in the Town Hall atrium, curated by maestro Paolo Scibilia and directed by Dora De Maio. On July 22nd, the Villa Comunale hosted the meeting with Francesca Albanese, in dialogue about her book La luce del risveglio, as part of the International Festival of Journalism and Investigative Books: a sold-out evening that confirmed the festival's vocation for public debate.
The program, as announced by the Administration, continues in the following weeks with new appointments, with the declared goal of making Meta a cultural reference point for the Sorrento Peninsula.
The festival continues in the following weeks with further cultural, musical, performance, and sporting events: dates and titles are communicated progressively by the Municipality of Meta.
By train: the Circumvesuviana (EAV) on the Naples–Sorrento line stops at the Meta station, a few minutes' walk from the center and the Villa Comunale. By car: A3 Naples–Salerno motorway, exit at Castellammare di Stabia, then take the SS145 Sorrentina towards Sorrento; in summer, coastal traffic is heavy and parking in the center is limited, so it is best to arrive early. By plane: Naples Capodichino Airport, then take the direct Curreri bus to Sorrento with a stop on the Peninsula.
Villa Comunale of Meta, Town Hall atrium (Via Municipio, 7), and Camillo Paturzo Multipurpose Center. Most evenings take place outdoors: light clothing is recommended, but bring a light jacket for after sunset.
The events are organized by the Municipality of Meta and generally take place in the evening, with access subject to availability. For entry conditions, times, and reservations, it is best to check the official municipal channels (tel. +39 081 0812221) for each event.
Meta has hotels and accommodations right by the beach; alternatively, Sorrento, Piano di Sorrento, and Vico Equense are reachable in a few minutes by train.
