Three nights of free blues in a Sannio village
At the end of July, Melizzano—a small town of just over 1,800 inhabitants at 190 meters above sea level in the province of Benevento, Campania—undergoes a transformation: the main square becomes an open-air stage, and the village alleys fill with guitars, harmonicas, and raspy voices. Melizzano in Blues is one of the historic summer events in the Sannio region dedicated to blues and its various influences. In 2026, it reaches its eleventh edition, scheduled from July 31 to August 2, with free admission as always.
The festival has deep roots. As early as 2008, the event occupied the charming Piazzetta del Tiglio for four evenings, organized by the local Pro Loco, and by 2010, concerts were held in Piazza Roma, in front of the imposing Castello Caracciolo. For three days a year, this town in the heart of inland Campania claims, with little modesty, the title of Italy's blues capital.
The artistic direction is entrusted to Giò Vescovi, a musician from Caserta who curated the lineup as far back as 2008. Every year, he crafts a program that balances classic blues, Delta sounds, rock influences, and emerging artists. The main square hosts live concerts with groups from across the peninsula: a single stage, sets that run late into the night, and no tickets to buy.
Over the years, the Melizzano stage has hosted artists well-known to genre enthusiasts, from Campanian bands like Blue Stuff to guitarists like Nick Becattini and soul voices like Sherrita Duran—a lineup that has always looked beyond regional borders while remaining free and deeply popular.
The new feature of the 2026 edition is the Festa nella Festa (Party within the Party). While music plays in the square, the ancient heart of the town lights up with street performers, souvenir shops open late, tasting points, light displays, and DJ sets for dancing under the stars. The result is a continuous path through alleys and squares that allows even those who prefer to stroll and snack rather than sit in front of the stage to fully experience the festival.
Melizzano in Blues is more than just a concert series. The program includes exclusive documentaries dedicated to music, book presentations, art exhibitions, a craft market, and trekking walks to discover the natural beauty of the area. The ViviSannio association, based in the town, manages this side program and organizes pre-events in the preceding months called «Waiting for Melizzano in Blues»: in 2026, the final appointment was held on May 30, featuring a free tasting of bread, olive oil, and wine, followed by a walk along the Maltempo stream.
For families, there is a kids' area with a dedicated play space—a detail that makes the festival suitable for those arriving with children who want to stay late into the evening.
The food and wine aspect is one of the reasons for the event's success, with over 700 seats and large stands dedicated to local culinary traditions. The evening menus feature dishes that tell the story of the Benevento countryside:
Melizzano is located about 45 km northeast of Naples and about 25 km west of Benevento, in that stretch of inland Campania made of vineyards, olive groves, and small villages known as Sannio. It is an area that is rarely visited but has much to offer: wineries, local products, trails along streams, and a pace of life that moves entirely outdoors in the summer. The festival thus becomes a great excuse to discover the province of Benevento off the beaten path.
Behind the 2026 edition are the ViviSannio association, which coordinates side events with its members, and a network of local sponsors and partners: Edilizia Sannita as the main sponsor, alongside entities like IGAT, Casa Mia Wine and Spirit, Vini Papa, and the Azienda Agricola Novo. The official poster is a hand-drawn illustration by artist Gennaro Leva, who captured the authentic and vibrant spirit of the event with his style. Program updates are primarily shared through the organizers' social media channels and local Sannio press.
Because it is a free festival that doesn't compromise on musical quality; because blues played in a village square among old stone houses gains a naturalness that large stages lack; and because you eat well, at a leisurely pace, at festival prices. Three good reasons to mark the last days of July on your calendar.
Three days, from July 31 to August 2, with the main square of Melizzano occupied by live concerts from bands across Italy and the historic center enlivened by this year's novelty, the «Festa nella Festa». The artistic direction remains in the hands of Giò Vescovi, who has announced a lineup built on quality, energy, and a few surprises for genre enthusiasts.
Alongside the concerts, the program for the eleventh edition includes exclusive documentaries, book presentations, exhibitions, a craft market, and nature walks in the area, curated by the ViviSannio association together with the spring pre-events «Waiting for Melizzano in Blues». Admission to all evenings is free.
The gastronomic offer includes over 700 seats and large stands dedicated to local traditions: homemade cavatelli and tagliatelle, caciocavallo impiccato, grilled meat, roasted mortadella, stuffed peppers, spelt salad, and platters of Sannio cured meats and cheeses, accompanied by wines from partner wineries. A dedicated play area is set up for children.
At the time of publication, the detailed musical lineup for the eleventh edition has not been made public: the organizers and artistic director Giò Vescovi have announced the presence of blues bands from all over Italy, without releasing the names of the groups or the times of individual performances. We will update this section as soon as the full program is available.
By car: Melizzano is about 45 km from Naples and about 25 km from Benevento; the main road for the Valle Telesina is the state road 372 «Telesina». On festival nights, it is best to arrive early and park outside the historic center, which is closed to traffic and pedestrian-only.
By train: the most convenient stop is the Benevento station, from which you can continue by car or local bus connections.
By plane: Naples-Capodichino airport is about 50 km away.
Admission to the festival is free of charge for all three evenings, including concerts. You only pay for what you consume at the food stands and tasting points, with typical local festival prices.
