About Mediterranean Competition

Every spring, the Mediterranean International Music Competition transforms the Norman-Swabian Castle of Sannicandro di Bari into a stage for young talents and established performers. Promoted by the Art Ionica Association of Taranto with the support of the local municipality, it combines auditions, rehearsals, and public concerts, featuring sections for piano, opera, chamber music, and choral groups. An event that celebrates the artistic and historical heritage of Apulia through the dialogue between Mediterranean cultures.

A competition that makes the castle sing

Every year, in late spring, the Norman-Swabian Castle of Sannicandro di Bari opens its halls to the Mediterranean International Music Competition, one of the most vibrant competitive events in the province of Bari. For several days, the ancient walls of the fortress, the historic heart of the town of Sannicandro di Bari, are filled with music: students from music-oriented schools and conservatories, as well as established concert performers, take turns in auditions and concerts open to the public with free admission.

Organizers

The event is promoted by the Art Ionica Association of Taranto with the patronage of the Municipality of Sannicandro di Bari, and has long benefited from the collaboration of local entities such as the I.W.I. Club Bari Alto Terre dei Peuceti, the Lions Club Bari San Nicola, and the Associazione Gabriel, with Marangi Pianoforti as the technical sponsor. The competition is dedicated to the memory of pianist Pia Antonacci and baritone Antonio Sallustio, renowned Apulian artists, performers, and teachers whose musical legacy permeates the entire event.

The Sections

The competition has a pluralistic soul, bringing together different genres and generations. Alongside the National Section reserved for students of music-oriented middle schools (SMIM) and music high schools, the editions have featured soloists and ensembles in numerous categories:

  • piano and solo instruments;
  • opera singing, with the Antonio Sallustio Prize;
  • chamber music;
  • choral ensembles;
  • contemporary music;
  • pop music for young Apulian performers.

The jury brings together professors from conservatories and academies: over the years, it has included, among others, Maestro Claudio Ciampa as president of the National Section and Maestro Annibale Rebaudengo as honorary president.

A bridge across the Mediterranean

The name is no coincidence: the competition was born with the intent to spread music while respecting diverse cultures and to promote the historical and artistic heritage of Apulia. Recent editions have seen hundreds of participants from not only Italy but also Romania, Croatia, Greece, Ukraine, and even Korea, confirming a truly international vocation that has made Sannicandro di Bari, a small town in the Bari hinterland, a meeting point for young musicians from across the Mediterranean basin and beyond.

Why you should attend

Attending the Mediterranean Competition means discovering the talents of tomorrow in an exceptional setting, within the halls of a medieval castle. Rehearsals and concerts are free and open to the public: an opportunity to enjoy great live music and experience the focused, passionate atmosphere of a musical competition in the heart of Apulia.
