Three days of medieval historical re-enactment in the village and Abbey of Monteveglio
Every year, at the beginning of summer, the charming village of Monteveglio — part of the Municipality of Valsamoggia, in the province of Bologna (Emilia-Romagna) — transforms into an authentic medieval village. Feste da Medioevo – Abbazia 1092 is a grand historical re-enactment that for three days enlivens the village streets, the castle walls, and the areas around the Abbey of Santa Maria Assunta, a Romanesque jewel nestled in the Monteveglio Abbey Regional Park.
Ladies, knights, archers, jesters, falconers, blacksmiths, artisans, and brigands populate the village, immersing residents and visitors in an atmosphere of yesteryear. The event is organized by the Pro Loco Monteveglio with the support of the Municipality of Valsamoggia and local partners.
The most anticipated moment is the re-enactment of the Battle of Zappolino, fought in 1325 between Bologna and Modena and remembered as one of the most famous clashes of the Emilian Middle Ages, linked to the tale of the Secchia rapita (Stolen Bucket). The 2025 and 2026 editions symbolically open and close the Zappolino700 celebration path, dedicated to the 700th anniversary of the battle.
Among the hilly hamlets between Bologna and Modena, Monteveglio is an ideal destination for those who love history, folk traditions, and the landscapes of the Bolognese Apennines. The Abbey setting, the historic cellars, and the Rainbow Park provide a natural backdrop for one of the most beloved medieval re-enactments in the metropolitan area of Bologna.
The 2026 edition animated Monteveglio from June 5 to 7, distributing events between the Abbey of Santa Maria Assunta, the village, the Abbey Cellars, the Rainbow Park, and Borgo San Teodoro. The event symbolically closed the celebrations of the Zappolino700 project.
Opening evening in the evocative Abbey Cellars: a dinner inspired by the flavors and atmospheres of the past, curated by IPSAR L. Veronelli and accompanied by harp music.
Monteveglio is located about 25 km southwest of Bologna. By car: take the A1 motorway to the Valsamoggia exit, then follow signs for Monteveglio. By train: Bazzano station (Bologna–Vignola line), then continue by bus or car to the village.
The event takes place over three days, usually on the first weekend of June (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday).
Admission to the event is free. The medieval dinner on Friday is by reservation (paid). For the updated program and reservations, consult the Valsamoggia tourism website and the Pro Loco Monteveglio page.
Comfortable shoes for the cobbled village streets and a light jacket for the evening shows. Many activities are designed for children.
