Tournament of historical flag-wavers and musicians in Piazza Dante in Quattro Castella
The Matilde di Canossa Tournament is an event for historical flag-wavers and musicians that takes place in Piazza Dante Alighieri, in the center of Quattro Castella, in the province of Reggio Emilia, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna. Part of the prestigious re-enactment tradition of the Matildic lands, the tournament attracts companies from various Italian regions for a day entirely dedicated to the art of the flag and ancient music.
The tournament is a federal competition that pits standard-bearers and musicians against each other in the various recognized specialties. The companies compete in the single exercise, in pairs, and in small formations, with distinct categories for Under 15, Under 18, and Seniors. Each performance combines technical precision, elegance of throws, and rhythmic power of drums and clarions, in a crescendo that transforms the square into a grand open-air spectacle.
The event is named after Matilde di Canossa, the great countess who played a key role in Italian medieval history, whose figure is inextricably linked to Quattro Castella and its hills. It was here, in a famous historical meeting, that the events of the 11th and 12th centuries, which made these lands a symbol of the European Middle Ages, intertwined. The tournament thus fits into the great local re-enactment tradition, of which the Corteo Storico Matildico (Matildic Historical Pageant) is the best-known expression.
The art of flag-waving has its roots in the military and ceremonial insignia of the Italian Renaissance. In Quattro Castella, this discipline finds an ideal setting among the historic buildings of the square, where the colors of the flags and the sound of the drums take the audience on a journey through time. The tournament enhances the link between flag traditions and the cultural heritage of the places that host them, promoting the transmission of this art to younger generations.
The Matilde di Canossa Tournament is a free event suitable for everyone, ideal for those who love folklore, historical re-enactments, and the popular traditions of Emilia. Between performances, the day is an opportunity to discover the village of Quattro Castella and the suggestive Matildic hills, in one of the most historically rich areas of the province of Reggio Emilia.
The fourth edition of the Matilde di Canossa Tournament animated Piazza Dante Alighieri in Quattro Castella on Sunday, March 8, 2026, bringing together eight companies of historical flag-wavers and musicians.
The tournament featured the specialties of single (Under 15, Under 18, and Senior), pair (Under 15, Under 18, and Senior), and small formation (Under 18 and Senior), in compliance with federal regulations.
Quattro Castella is located a few kilometers from Reggio Emilia, along the rolling hills road. By car, it can be reached from the A1 motorway (Reggio Emilia exit) continuing southwest towards the hills. The nearest train station is Reggio Emilia, connected to the town by local bus lines.
The competitions are held in Piazza Dante Alighieri, in the town center, in an easily accessible area on foot.
Access to the performances in the square is free. It is advisable to consult the official channels of the Italian Flag-wavers League for updated times and details on the competition program.
