Europe's southernmost open-air cinema, under the stars of Marzamemi
The International Frontier Film Festival takes place every summer in Marzamemi, an ancient fishing village that is part of the municipality of Pachino, on the southeastern tip of Sicily, in the province of Syracuse. Founded in 2000 by director Nello Correale together with Gian Paolo Cugno and Sebastiano Gesรน, the festival has always had a clear vocation: to use cinema as a window onto geographical, artistic, and cultural borders, in a place where Europe looks out toward Africa and Asia across the sea.
The heart of the event is Piazza Regina Margherita, nestled between the two historic tuna fisheries and the stone houses of the village. For one week, the square transforms into Europe's southernmost open-air cinema, where screenings under the stars alternate with meetings with directors and actors, masterclasses, premieres, and concerts. The village of Marzamemi, with its narrow alleys, its port, and its atmosphere suspended between the sea and tradition, is an integral part of the experience: the frontier is not just a theme on the screen, but the very place where the festival lives.
The program is structured around competitions for feature films and short films, with a particular focus on Mediterranean, independent, and auteur cinema. Over the years, the festival has awarded internationally acclaimed films and hosted Italian and foreign actors and directors. Since 2016, the festival has been accompanied by the literary section Frontiera del libro, dedicated to meetings with writers and the presentation of books related to the themes of cinema and the Mediterranean.
Beyond the quality of its selection, the Frontier Film Festival has become a defining event for Marzamemi and the entire Val di Noto territory: an opportunity to experience the village through a cultural lens, amidst evening screenings, debates, and festive moments. The event, which attracts cinephiles, industry professionals, and tourists every year, helps to promote one of the most evocative villages in southeastern Sicily, already part of the circuit of the most beloved spots on the Syracuse coast.
Marzamemi is a hamlet of the Municipality of Pachino, in the southern tip of Sicily, a land of wine, tomatoes, and tuna fisheries. The festival is part of a summer season full of events that enliven this corner of the Sicilian Region, between the sea, gastronomy, and culture, and represents one of the longest-running and most recognizable cinematic events on the island.
From July 20 to 26, 2026, Marzamemi, a hamlet of Pachino (SR), hosts a new edition of the International Frontier Film Festival. For one week, Piazza Regina Margherita will once again transform into Europe's southernmost open-air cinema, featuring evening screenings, premieres, concerts, and meetings with directors and actors.
The edition promises to be rich and international, faithful to the festival's vocation for auteur and Mediterranean cinema. At the moment, the full program and the list of guests have not yet been made public: we invite you to check the official website and the event's channels for updates.
