The Marian festival of the Maria Regina district in Squinzano, in the heart of Salento
In the heart of the Lecce Salento, the town of Squinzano (Province of Lecce, Apulia) celebrates the Maria Regina Festival every year, a devotional event that gives its name to the town's namesake district. Promoted by the Maria Regina Parish, led by Father Vanni Bisconti, the festival intertwines religious and secular dimensions in a program that involves the entire community of the neighborhood.
The heart of the celebration is the devotion to the Virgin Mary, experienced in the month of May, which is traditionally dedicated to her. The religious program opens with a Marian vigil titled "Between music, poetry, and an adoring spirit," animated by the "Nonsoloopera" association from Trepuzzi. This is followed by Holy Masses, solemn vespers, and the solemn procession with the statue of the Madonna, which winds through the streets of the district—including Via Risorgimento, XXIV Maggio, Montegrappa, and many others—concluding with an act of entrustment to Mary and a final blessing upon returning to the church.
Alongside the liturgical dimension, there is a festive and communal side. Piazza Italo Passante hosts an evening of entertainment with the traveling show "Ciccio Riccio in Tour," while a performance by the "Evolution Dance" school, led by teacher Clarissa Tau, brings music and movement to the neighborhood streets. The festival concludes with the "Biciclettiamo verso Maria" initiative, a bike ride for catechism children toward the Madonna del Garofano sanctuary in Nunziatella.
The Maria Regina Festival is part of the rich calendar of patronal and Marian feasts that characterize Salento and the whole of Apulia, where popular religiosity translates into moments of gathering, art, and conviviality. In Squinzano, a town also known for its band tradition, the event is an opportunity to rediscover the identity of the district and experience faith together through processions, music, and performances open to all.
The Maria Regina Festival 2026 opened on Friday, May 29 at 8:30 PM with the Marian vigil "Between music, poetry, and an adoring spirit," animated by the "Nonsoloopera" association from Trepuzzi. Saturday, May 30, the 9:00 AM Holy Mass and the 6:30 PM solemn vespers preceded the solemn procession with the statue of the Madonna through the streets of the district (Risorgimento, XXIV Maggio, Montegrappa, Campi, and many others), which concluded with the act of entrustment and the blessing. Sunday, May 31, the day of the feast, Eucharistic celebrations (8:30 AM, 10:30 AM, and the 7:00 PM solemn mass presided over by Father Vanni Bisconti) gave way in the evening to the secular celebration in Piazza Italo Passante with "Ciccio Riccio in Tour" and the performance by the Evolution Dance school. The festival closed on Monday, June 1 with the "Biciclettiamo verso Maria" initiative.
