A devotion spanning centuries

The Maria Regina degli Angeli Festival is the most important religious event for the community of Mineo, an ancient village in the Calatino area perched on the Iblean Mountains, in the province of Catania, Sicily. The festival has its roots in a centuries-old veneration: the Virgin, initially honored under the title of the Immaculate Conception, was later invoked as Queen of the Angels. The "royal" title dates back to 1643, when, according to tradition, King Philip IV obtained a grace through the intercession of the Madonna and requested its solemn proclamation by the Holy See.

The alabaster statue

The absolute star of the festivities is the precious statue of the Virgin, an alabaster simulacrum that tradition claims was donated by Count Roger in 1072. The work depicts a slender and elegant figure with wavy robes and a youthful, benevolent face, holding the Child on her left arm. It is an artifact of great artistic and devotional value, jealously guarded by the Mineo community and carried in procession only once a year.

The barefoot procession

The highlight of the festival is the solemn evening procession, one of the most evocative in inland Sicily. The statue of the Madonna is carried on the shoulders of devotees who, as a sign of a vow and penance, face the steep climbs of Mineo's historic center barefoot. The Virgin is accompanied by confraternities, city authorities, and a crowd of faithful who invoke her along the entire route, in an atmosphere of intense popular participation.

Between faith, history, and tradition

The festivities do not end with the liturgy. In the days leading up to the solemnity, the program includes the recitation of the rosary, Eucharistic celebrations, and, as a strong element of identity, a historical pageant set at the evocative Castello Ducezio, which evokes the medieval and noble past of the village. The festival thus becomes an opportunity to rediscover the history of Mineo, a city of ancient Siculian origins linked to the mythical King Ducetius.
