About Maria Corti Festival

For three days, the Maria Corti Festival turns Otranto into a creative hub dedicated to writing, reading, and the exchange of knowledge. Established to honor the legacy of Maria Corti, the philologist and writer deeply connected to this Salento town, the festival weaves together author talks, workshops, musical and theatrical performances, literary walks, and a magical sunrise at the Punta Palascìa Lighthouse. Held in June between the Aragonese Castle and the town's most evocative spots, the event is directed by Paola Moscardino and promoted by Otranto Culture in partnership with the Municipality of Otranto.

A literary festival in the heart of Salento

The Maria Corti Festival is a cultural event held every June in Otranto, the 'pearl of Salento' overlooking the channel that bears its name, in the Province of Lecce and the heart of Puglia. The festival is dedicated to Maria Corti (1915-2002), a renowned philologist, literary critic, and writer who was a central figure in 20th-century Italian culture. She shared a deep bond with Otranto, the city that inspired her famous novel L'ora di tutti, which recounts the 1480 massacre of the Idruntini.

A dialogue between disciplines

Promoted by the Otranto Culture association in collaboration with the Municipality of Otranto and the Maria Corti Foundation of the University of Pavia, the festival is directed by Paola Moscardino. Each edition centers on a specific theme and keyword that serve as the common thread for meetings, debates, and events. The festival goes beyond literature: writing engages with science, history, sociology, art, and music, embracing a vision of knowledge that transcends disciplinary boundaries.

Festival venues

The heart of the event is the Aragonese Castle of Otranto, which hosts recitals, concerts, and evening talks. However, the festival also spills out into the historic center and the surrounding area: Palazzo de' Mori, the Lega Navale, the Le Fabbriche community library at the port, and most notably the Punta Palascìa Lighthouse—the easternmost point in Italy—where one of the most beloved traditions takes place: a sunrise reading overlooking the Adriatic Sea.

Beyond the talks

Alongside author meetings, the program features workshops for children and families, theatrical tours, urban games inspired by Maria Corti's novels, tastings, literary tours of the places where she grew up (from Otranto to Maglie), and musical performances. Over the years, the festival has also established the Maria Corti Literary Prize, organized by the Maria Corti Foundation, cementing its status as a cultural landmark not only for Salento but for the entire Puglia region.

Why attend

The Maria Corti Festival is the perfect opportunity to experience Otranto beyond its seaside appeal: a town that becomes a stage for words, ideas, and encounters, where the city's historical heritage engages with great contemporary literature. It is an event designed for curious readers, families, and anyone looking to discover the cultural soul of Salento.

Maria Corti Festival — edition 2026

The 5th edition of the Maria Corti Festival took place in Otranto from June 12 to 14, 2026, with the theme "Between Science and Humanism," an invitation to reflect on the dialogue between scientific and humanistic culture. Three days of talks, workshops, recitals, and music between the Aragonese Castle and the city's iconic landmarks, featuring guests such as Enrico Terrinoni, Nicoletta Vallorani, Flavio Santi, and the Trio Porto Madera.

The fifth edition of the Maria Corti Festival, directed by Paola Moscardino and promoted by Otranto Culture with the Municipality of Otranto, chose the theme "Between Science and Humanism": a reflection on the value of the complexity of human experience and the need for an integrated vision of knowledge. The festival was supported by the University of Salento and the Manuscript Center of the University of Pavia, in collaboration with the Maria Corti Foundation.

Among the new features of this edition was the Podcast Room at the Aragonese Castle, created with SUR - Radio Università del Salento, and a photography contest aimed at schools in Otranto, Maglie, and Martano on the theme "You sea, innumerable language," inspired by Gesualdo Bufalino. The urban games inspired by L'ora di tutti and the Kids section for families were also confirmed.
