Rap, hip-hop, and emerging talent in Piazza Agorà, in the heart of the Vallo di Diano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Malafest is the music festival that brings Buonabitacolo to life every summer. Located in the province of Salerno, in the heart of the Vallo di Diano, Campania, this small town hosts the event which, since its inception in 2017 as a rap and hip-hop contest, has grown edition after edition to become a regional benchmark, known well beyond the local borders.
The core philosophy remains simple: to provide musicians with a real space to perform. The Associazione Fermento, which organizes the festival, provides emerging artists with a fully equipped stage, professional sound systems, and a skilled technical crew, all free of charge. For many young people in the Vallo di Diano, Malafest has been their first opportunity to perform in front of a large audience.
The evenings take place in Piazza Agorà (Piazza Aldo Moro), the most vibrant public space in Buonabitacolo. Featuring a large permanent stage, it is perfectly designed for concerts and events. During Malafest, it fills with young people arriving from all the neighboring towns—Padula, Sanza, Sala Consilina, and Montesano sulla Marcellana—transforming into a true open-air arena.
In 2023, the fifth edition spanned two nights, August 17th and 18th: the first dedicated to the rap contest, hosted by DJ Raffaele Nacarlo (LeleJoop) and judged by, among others, the Campanian rapper Patto MC, while the second night was headlined by the Neapolitan rapper CoCo. In 2024, the sixth edition, held on August 17th and 18th, featured content creator Nello Taver alongside Mielino, Ghosts, and LB Prada, followed the next evening by Livio Cori, a well-known face of the Neapolitan scene, joined by Amasu, Michele Pellegrino, and Silvio Celano. In 2025, the festival returned for its seventh edition, condensed into a single night on August 8th.
Malafest is not just a concert series; it is a cultural project aimed at showcasing local talent, offering healthy entertainment for young people, and bringing visitors to an inland area of Campania often overlooked by major tourist circuits. Admission is traditionally free, and the event is organized on a non-profit basis, thanks to the support of the Municipality of Buonabitacolo and local sponsors.
The event usually falls in August, in the middle of the Vallo di Diano's summer festival season and just a few days before the feast of San Donato, which brings Piazza Agorà to life on August 12th and 13th. Precise dates are announced by the Associazione Fermento on their social media channels in the weeks leading up to the event: if you want to attend, it is best to follow them, as the program is revealed gradually.
The Associazione Fermento has announced the return of Malafest to Buonabitacolo, in the province of Salerno, with a social media event dedicated to the 2026 edition. At the moment, however, neither the exact day nor the names of the artists expected in Piazza Agorà have been released.
Previous editions have always taken place in August, over one or two nights, with free admission and a program that alternates between local youth and well-known guests from the Italian rap scene. It is reasonable to expect the same format, but until the organizers publish the official calendar, it is best to check the association's channels.
Those wishing to perform can contact the Associazione Fermento: participation for emerging artists is free, and applications are collected via social media or email in the weeks leading up to the event.
Buonabitacolo can be reached via the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, taking the Padula-Buonabitacolo exit, just a few minutes from the town center. The most convenient train station is Sapri, about 45 km away, which is connected by bus lines. The main airport is Naples-Capodichino, just over a two-hour drive away.
All evenings are held in Piazza Agorà (Piazza Aldo Moro), in the center of Buonabitacolo. The square is pedestrianized during events: it is best to park in the surrounding streets and arrive a little early.
In previous editions, admission has always been free, with no reservations or tickets required.
Performances start in the evening and continue late into the night: it is a good idea to bring a light jacket, as even in August, nights in the Vallo di Diano can be cool. For accommodation, the widest range of options can be found in Padula, Sala Consilina, and Montesano sulla Marcellana, all less than fifteen kilometers away.
