An Entire Month of Events in Potenza

Maggio Potentino is the festival that, every year, transforms Potenza into a large, widespread stage for the entire month of May. Promoted by the Municipality of Potenza, the program brings together dozens of cultural and entertainment proposals: over 75 events for more than 100 appointments spread across the historic center, theaters, galleries, and neighborhoods of the city.

This is not a single festival, but a container that gathers very different initiatives: circus shows and acrobatic arts, art exhibitions, music festivals, chamber music reviews, dialect theater, sports tournaments, events for children, and food and wine moments. The common thread is the desire to experience the city outdoors, in its squares and streets, with spring in full bloom.

From Shows to Traditions

The program alternates major popular events with niche proposals. Among the recurring events are the acrobatic arts of Gravity Zero in Via Pretoria, the flower and gardening market exhibition Città in Fiore in Piazza Matteotti, art exhibitions at the Civic Gallery, festivals of conservatories and schools, the Potenza Folk Festival in Piazza Mario Pagano, and numerous evenings of music and dialect theater.

The month involves symbolic spaces of the city: the historic center, the Teatro Stabile, the Civic Gallery, the Palazzo della Cultura, the Malvaccaro auditorium, and the various neighborhoods, with particular attention to local associations and schools.

The Climax: San Gerardo and the Parade of the Turks

Maggio Potentino reaches its peak in the last days of the month, when the city celebrates its patron saint, San Gerardo La Porta. The religious and civil celebrations culminate in the Historic Parade of the Turks, a grand re-enactment with over a thousand participants that crosses Potenza, and the evocative Procession of San Gerardo. It is the moment when tradition, faith, and civic identity merge in one of the most heartfelt events in Basilicata.
