A month of events, culture, and traditions in the heart of the Valdichiana Aretina
The Maggio Castiglionese is the most anticipated event of the year in Castiglion Fiorentino, a charming walled village in the Valdichiana Aretina, in the province of Arezzo, Tuscany. Born in 1977, this historic event hub is not just a single celebration but an entire month of initiatives that enliven the squares, alleys, and cloisters of the historic center from late April to the first days of June.
Organized by the Municipality of Castiglion Fiorentino in collaboration with local associations, districts, and Pro Loco groups, the Maggio hosts over fifty appointments each year, ranging from art to food and wine, from historical re-enactments to religious celebrations, as well as sports and folk events that involve the entire town.
The culinary heart of the festival beats around the Valdichiana Wine Festival, hosted in the scenic Cloister of San Francesco: a showcase featuring hundreds of labels and dozens of local wineries, from the Valdichiana Aretina to the Sienese and Umbrian areas, complete with masterclasses for enthusiasts.
Alongside the wine, the I Primi di Maggio event in Piazzale Garibaldi celebrates pasta and Italian cuisine, with iconic first courses prepared live, cooking shows, music, and DJ sets. There is no shortage of exhibition fairs, such as the historic May 1st Fair along Viale Marconi, the Honey Fair on Corso Italia, and local food festivals, like the Wild Boar Festival in Montecchio.
Significant space is dedicated to the festivals of the districts and 'terzieri' (neighborhoods), which bring the atmosphere of the past back to life:
The cultural program includes numerous exhibitions set up in the most evocative corners of the village, including the Castiglioni Photo Fest and a photography exhibition tracing the history of the Maggio from 1977 to today. Traditional highlights include the solemn celebrations dedicated to the patron saint Saint Michael the Archangel, gatherings of marching bands and vintage cars, as well as many outdoor initiatives designed for families and visitors.
With its mix of tradition, taste, and entertainment, the Maggio Castiglionese is the ideal opportunity to discover one of the most fascinating villages in the Tuscan Valdichiana during the most beautiful time of the year.
The 2026 edition of the Maggio Castiglionese opened on May 1st and unfolded over more than a month of appointments including fairs, food and wine, culture, and historical re-enactments, involving the entire village of the Valdichiana Aretina.
By train: the Castiglion Fiorentino station is on the Florence–Rome line (slow line), just a few minutes' walk from the historic center.
