Epiphany in the square with stockings, nativity scenes, and winter flavours
In Maerne di Martellago, in the province of Venice, Epiphany is a public celebration. On January 6th, the Befana arrives in Piazza IV Novembre to distribute traditional stockings filled with sweets to children, offered by the town centre merchants: this is the most anticipated moment of a day that marks the end of the municipality's long Christmas period.
Other initiatives revolve around the Befana's arrival: the nativity scene exhibition remains open, food stalls offer Christmas specialities, and the atmosphere remains that of the intimate and familiar village festivals. The event is organised by the Pro Loco Martellago together with the MOM Commerce District, confirming how in Maerne popular tradition and local commerce go hand in hand.
The Befana Festival is designed primarily for children, but it involves the whole community: it's an opportunity to gather in the square one last time before returning to everyday life, amidst the warmth of seasonal sweets and the charm of the nativity scenes that have enlivened the town for all the festive weeks.
The 2026 edition took place on Tuesday, January 6th, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, in Piazza IV Novembre in Maerne. The Befana distributed stockings filled with sweets to children, offered by the town centre merchants, while the nativity scene exhibition remained open and food stalls offered Christmas specialities. The initiative was curated by Pro Loco Martellago with the MOM Commerce District.
