The patronal feast of Roccavivi

Every summer, the small village of Roccavivi, a hamlet of San Vincenzo Valle Roveto in the province of L'Aquila, gathers around its patron saint with solemn festivities in honor of the Madonna delle Grazie. It is the most cherished event of the year for the entire Valle Roveto community, drawing back emigrants for the occasion and attracting pilgrims from the neighboring towns of the western Marsica region.

The Sanctuary of Roccavecchia

The heart of the festival is the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, located in the Roccavecchia area on the mountain slopes, where the ancient settlement of Roccavivi once stood before being destroyed by a devastating landslide in February 1616. With its Romanesque structure, restored several times over the centuries, the sanctuary houses the ancient and venerated image of the Madonna, the object of deep popular devotion throughout the valley.

A tradition renewed

Since 1994, the ritual has followed a precise path: the image of the Madonna is carried in procession from the Roccavecchia sanctuary to the parish church of Roccavivi for the preparatory novena; during the peak days of the festivities, a moving torchlight procession returns the image to its original sanctuary. The days are filled with Eucharistic celebrations, rosaries, youth night vigils, pilgrimages, and moments of popular celebration.

Music, fireworks, and community

Alongside the religious dimension, the festivities feature brass band concerts accompanying the procession, highly anticipated firework displays, and committee stands offering souvenirs and traditional sweets. In recent editions, the festival has also been enriched by a stop on the Hermitage Trekking route, managed by the Terre Nostre Cooperative, which leads hikers to the sanctuary nestled in the greenery. It is a blend of the sacred and the secular that captures the soul of this corner of Abruzzo.
