The patronal feast of Aielli, blending faith, processions, and Marsican tradition
The Madonna della Vittoria Festival is the most significant event in the religious and community life of Aielli, a small village in the Marsica region overlooking the plateau of the former Fucino lake, in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo. The Madonna della Vittoria is the town's patron saint, and a festival blending liturgical solemnity and popular celebration is dedicated to her during the first week of July.
According to oral tradition, devotion to the Madonna della Vittoria began in 1758. That year, a severe drought struck the area, threatening the entire harvest. To invoke rain, the people of Aielli decided to hold a solemn procession to retrieve the statue of the Virgin from the church and carry it through the town. During the return journey toward Monte Secine, thick clouds appeared, and the resulting rain saved the harvest that had been considered lost. Since then, as a sign of gratitude, the community has vowed to repeat the procession with the statue of the Madonna every year.
The statue of the Madonna is the object of deep devotion for the faithful of Aielli, who carry it in procession twice a year, in May and July, ideally linking it to the Church of San Rocco. The evening procession in May and the religious and secular festivities of the first week of July have marked the town's devotional calendar for centuries. The July festival, traditionally celebrated on the first Sunday of the month, represents the culmination of the patronal celebrations.
Aielli is no ordinary village: perched at an altitude of over a thousand meters, it is famous for its Torre delle Stelle, an ancient medieval tower transformed into a public astronomical observatory, and for the Borgo Universo urban art project, which has covered house facades with large murals. In this evocative setting, the Madonna della Vittoria Festival offers visitors the chance to discover the deep identity of a Marsican community that renews its bond with its patron saint every year.
Beyond the strictly religious aspect, the festival is a gathering point for the entire town and for Aielli emigrants; in fact, the celebration is even replicated by the Aielli community in Mississauga, Canada. Music, social gatherings, and the choral participation of the town transform the occasion into a true popular festival, rooted in tradition yet always vibrant.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna della Vittoria Festival renewed the ancient 1758 vow in Aielli, with the procession of the patron saint's statue through the streets of the town and religious and civil festivities concentrated in the first week of July. As per tradition, the Aielli community gathered around their Madonna in a moment of shared faith and celebration, in the village overlooking the Fucino plateau, in the province of L'Aquila.
Aielli is located in the province of L'Aquila, in the Marsica region. By car, it is accessible via the A25 motorway (Aielli-Celano exit), a short distance from the village. The Aielli train station is served by the Rome-Pescara line.
The festivities take place during the first week of July, featuring the patronal procession; an evening procession also takes place in May.
