A neighborhood festival that has become a Castelli tradition

The Madonna della Molara Festival takes place every year at the end of July in the Molara district, on the outskirts of Monte Compatri, a town in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. Born shortly after 2000 from the initiative of a group of residents gathered in the Ego Ideam association (formerly « Insieme per Molara »), the event has surpassed twenty editions and is now a fixed date on the local summer calendar.

Popular devotion and neighborhood life

The religious heart of the festival remains the Holy Mass and the solemn procession which, on the final day, winds through the streets of the district accompanied by the local band, the Corpo Folkloristico Musicale Compatrum. It is a simple, deeply felt ritual where neighborhood families gather behind the image of the Madonna: a type of devotion with ancient roots in the Castelli Romani, which has been revitalized here in recent times around a young community.

The food stalls

In the evening, the secular side of the festival takes over. The food stall opens daily, offering dishes from Roman and Castelli cuisine; in recent years, organizers have dedicated evenings to a signature product — pappardelle in one edition, truffles in another — served alongside classic grilled meats, Castelli Romani wines, and homemade desserts. On holidays, the stall has also opened for lunch, a convenient option for those visiting from Rome for the day.

Music and entertainment every night

Each evening features live entertainment with a program designed to be popular and suitable for all ages: cover bands dedicated to the great names of Italian pop music, dance groups, comedy shows, and small theater companies have taken turns on the stage set up in the district. Past editions have featured, among others, The Phoenix, Mr. Jack, the Compagnia dei Nani, and 883 tribute bands. A must-see is the wheel of fortune with prizes, one of the most anticipated moments, especially by children.

When to go and what to expect

• Evenings begin around 7:00 PM when the stalls open: this is the best time to find a seat at the tables.
• Sunday is the most intense day, featuring the religious service, the procession, and the closing show.
• Admission is free and the festival takes place entirely outdoors: it is advisable to bring a light jacket, as the air cools down at night at an altitude of 500 meters.

Around the festival: Monte Compatri and the Castelli

Monte Compatri is one of the villages that make up the Castelli Romani system, about thirty kilometers from Rome, overlooking the Roman countryside from the northeastern side of the Alban Hills. The historic center, perched around the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, can be explored in an hour of walking through alleys and staircases, while the municipal territory is largely part of the Castelli Romani Regional Park, with trails through chestnut groves and panoramic viewpoints over the capital. A visit to the village in the late afternoon is the best way to arrive at Molara already in a festive mood.
