The grand patronal festival of Pratola Peligna, blending faith, tradition, and music
The Madonna della Libera Festival is the most important patronal feast in Pratola Peligna, a town in the Peligna Valley in the Province of L'Aquila, in the heart of Abruzzo. Rooted in a centuries-old cult, the event has for generations combined religious observance with a rich civic program, transforming the entire municipality into a grand open-air stage for nearly two weeks. It is considered one of the most attended and beloved celebrations in the entire region.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Libera, the destination for the novena and solemn celebrations. The most evocative tradition is that of the pilgrims who arrive on foot from Gioia dei Marsi and perform the "strascino" rite, crawling toward the altar as a sign of devotion. The solemn procession through the town streets, featuring the homage to the Mastra and the institutional pageant, represents the most intense and moving moment of the entire event.
Alongside religious celebrations, the civic program offers brass bands from across Abruzzo and Molise, parades, fireworks displays, revival nights, DJ sets, sporting events in the historic center, and art exhibitions. However, the hallmark of the Pratola festival is the major free concerts that have brought some of the most famous names in Italian music to the town squares over the years, attracting massive crowds.
The festival is also a time of homecoming for the emigrated Pratola community: every year, fellow citizens from abroad—particularly from Hartford, USA—are welcomed, testifying to the deep bond of identity that unites Pratola Peligna to its Madonna. Bands, majorettes, exhibitions, cultural conferences, and musical evenings mark the days, creating an atmosphere of shared celebration across generations.
Experiencing the Madonna della Libera Festival means immersing yourself in the authentic Abruzzese identity, amidst popular faith, ancient traditions, and major musical events. It is the perfect opportunity to discover Pratola Peligna, the Peligna Valley, and the cultural heritage of the Province of L'Aquila.
The 2026 edition of the patronal festival of Pratola Peligna was held from April 29 to May 10, preceded by the novena which began on April 23. The program combined, as per tradition, religious celebrations at the Sanctuary and a rich civic calendar.
On May 3, the heart of the Pratola tradition, the homage to the Mastra, the institutional pageant, the matinée of the Città di Ailano Band, and, at 4:45 PM, the solemn procession through the town streets to Piazza I Maggio took place. The evening of May 8 was dedicated to music with the Francesco Mammola Trio, the indie project AmbraMarie, and a DJ set by Turee.
The highlight of the edition was the concert by Francesco Renga on May 9 in Piazza del Milite Ignoto: a free show open to everyone, with which the singer-songwriter from Brescia kicked off his new tour right from Pratola. The festival concluded on May 10 with cultural events and the Effemme Live Show.
Pratola Peligna is located in the Peligna Valley, in the Province of L'Aquila. By car, it can be reached via the A25 motorway (Pratola Peligna-Sulmona exit). By train, the Pratola Peligna station is served by the Rome-Pescara line.
Religious celebrations and major civic events, including the concerts in the square, are free and open to the public.
During the festival days, the historic center is very crowded: it is advisable to arrive early for evening concerts and to plan for parking in the peripheral areas of the town.
