The international short film festival in the heart of Basilicata
Since 1999, the Lucania Film Festival has brought major international independent cinema to the heart of Basilicata. What began as a small showcase for short films is now one of the most established and recognized film events in the South, attracting directors, actors, and cinephiles from all over the world to the villages of the Metapontino and the Matera hinterland.
The festival is particularly dedicated to short films and auteur cinema, with an international competition that selects works from dozens of countries each year. Alongside screenings, the program includes masterclasses, meetings with authors, projects for schools, and cultural initiatives that blend cinema, literature, music, and civic engagement. The festival primarily comes alive through open-air screenings, with the CineParco TILT in Marconia di Pisticci serving as its headquarters, along with other events spread across Craco, the ghost village made famous by the big screen, and Bernalda.
Promoted by the Allelammie association with the support of the Municipality of Pisticci and local authorities, the Lucania Film Festival is more than just a showcase: it is a cultural project that enhances the landscapes of the Province of Matera, transforming them into open-air sets and stages. Spring cine-walks (film walks) through the Lucanian villages precede the main week in August, blending cinema with walking and discovering the territory. An experience that combines the quality of international selection with the authenticity of the real Basilicata.
The twenty-seventh edition of the Lucania Film Festival opens on August 2nd, 2026, with a dawn concert and continues until August 9th, for a week of cinema, meetings, and open-air screenings. The main venues are the CineParco TILT in Marconia di Pisticci, along with the villages of Craco and Bernalda. Among the most anticipated guests is director Matteo Garrone, who will give a masterclass. The international selection of short films is complemented by the 'Jury Pop', the audience's popular vote, and cinema projects for schools.
