The historic Mid-Lent Carnival of the Veronese plain, with floats, masks, and the Carnival with the Dog
The Legnago Carnival is one of the oldest carnival events in the Veronese plain. It is a Mid-Lent Carnival, celebrated well into Lent, following a tradition in Legnago, in the province of Verona, that is now over a century old.
The heart of the festival is the afternoon parade of floats, which starts from the Porto di Legnago district and reaches Piazza della Libertà, where the official procession begins. Along the streets of the center, floats, masked groups, majorettes, and flag-wavers parade, accompanied by entertainment and music from the stage in Piazza Garibaldi.
The carnival tradition of Legnago has its historical masks: Re della Patata and Lematho, symbolic figures of the city. An honored guest is often the Papà del Gnoco, the most famous mask of the Verona Carnival, linking Legnago to the great carnival tradition of the provincial capital.
One of the most beloved recent additions is the Carnival with the Dog, a morning parade dedicated to four-legged friends, bringing masked owners and dogs to the center for a final toast. The event is organized by Pro Loco Legnago with the support of the Municipality and local associations.
The Legnago Carnival celebrated its 102nd edition in 2026, held on Sunday, March 15, as the Mid-Lent Carnival. The afternoon parade started at 2:30 PM from Porto di Legnago, reaching Piazza della Libertà around 3:00 PM for the start of the official procession.
Floats, masked groups, majorettes, and flag-wavers animated the center, with guest of honor Papà del Gnoco and the historical Legnago masks Re della Patata and Lematho. In the morning, the 5th edition of the Carnival with the Dog took place, starting at 10:45 AM from Galleria Risorgimento. Entertainment from the stage in Piazza Garibaldi was provided by Radio RCS. Organization by Pro Loco Legnago.
Legnago can be reached by car from the A13 motorway (Boara or Rovigo exit) or from the Transpolesana SS434. The city is served by the Legnago railway station, on the lines to Verona, Rovigo, and Mantua.
The parade is free to watch along the city route. Road closures may be in place in the historic center during the event.
