The masked parade that closes the Veronese Carnival of January with the guest Papà del Gnoco
The Lavagno Carnival is the grand masked festival that every year, at the end of January, enlivens the municipality of Lavagno, in the east of the province of Verona. The event traditionally concludes last in the calendar of January carnival parades in the Veronese area, before the scene shifts to the city's Bacanal del Gnoco.
The day begins with a walk accompanied by the masks of I Conti del Busolo, starting from Piazza San Francesco in the hamlet of Vago and reaching San Pietro di Lavagno. In the early afternoon, the actual masked procession begins, with allegorical floats accompanied by the Carlo Montanari band and the majorettes of Lavagno, until the arrival in Piazza Don Attilio Vischi.
The special guest of the parade is the Papà del Gnoco, the oldest and most popular mask of the Verona Carnival, symbol of the famous Bacanal del Gnoco. His presence links the Lavagno festival to the great Veronese carnival tradition, one of the oldest in Italy.
The event is organized by the Department of Events of the Municipality of Lavagno together with the committee I Conti del Busolo and the Gruppo Sagra, with the support of numerous local volunteer associations. In Piazza Vischi, the celebration continues with shows, entertainment for children, and convivial moments open to all.
The 2026 edition of the Lavagno Carnival took place on Saturday, January 31, closing the January carnival parades in the province of Verona. The guest of honor was the 496th Papà del Gnoco, the historic mask of the Veronese Carnival.
The day began at 1 PM with a walk accompanied by the masks of I Conti del Busolo, starting from Piazza San Francesco in Vago towards San Pietro di Lavagno. At 2:30 PM, the masked procession departed from via Scolare with allegorical floats, the Carlo Montanari band, and the majorettes of Lavagno, concluding in Piazza Vischi with shows and entertainment.
Lavagno is located east of Verona, reachable by car from the SR11 or from the A4 motorway (Verona Est exit). The hamlet of San Pietro di Lavagno is served by the ATV public bus line from Verona.
The parade is free admission along the city route. During the day, traffic restrictions may be in place on the streets affected by the procession.
