The re-enactment of the Lombard wedding of Theodelinda to Agilulf in Lomello
Laumellum โ The Great Lombard Festival is the historical re-enactment in Lomello, a village in Lomellina, province of Pavia, which boasts a significant early medieval heritage, starting with the famous Baptistery of San Giovanni ad Fontes and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Organised by Pro Loco Lomello APS, the festival brings Lombard Lomello back to life.
At the heart of the re-enactment is a historical event linked to Lomello: in 590 AD, after the death of King Authari, the Lombards were allowed to let Queen Theodelinda retain her royal dignity and choose a new husband among the dukes. Her choice fell on Agilulf, Duke of Turin, and according to tradition, their meeting took place in the oppidum of Lomello. The festival re-enacts that meeting and wedding, with costumed parades and a philologically reconstructed ceremony.
Throughout the day, re-enactment groups bring the village to life with the activities of a 7th-century encampment: dyeing, weaving, bronze working, silver extraction, archery, and educational workshops on food and medicine of the era. There are also armed combat demonstrations, guided tours of the basilica, and a tavern serving historically inspired dishes.
The highlight is in the evening, with the re-enactment of the wedding and the royal banquet (by reservation), followed by musical performances and the fire games that conclude the festival. Free admission to the event: an occasion that celebrates the Lombard identity of Lomello and the entire Pavia Lomellina region.
Laumellum 2026 returns to Lomello in September, following the established annual schedule of the Pro Loco Lomello. The day will again feature the 7th-century encampment with dyeing, weaving, metalworking, archery, and educational workshops, armed combat demonstrations, guided tours of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, and a tavern. In the evening, the re-enactment of the wedding of Theodelinda and Agilulf, the royal banquet by reservation, and fire games to conclude. The exact date and detailed program will be published by the organisers in the weeks prior.
The full program for the 2026 edition will be announced by Pro Loco Lomello closer to the event.
Lomello is located in Lomellina, province of Pavia, between Mortara and Mede along the road to Pieve del Cairo. It can be reached by car via the provincial roads of Lomellina.
The festival takes place in September in the historic centre, around the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and the baptistery. Free admission to the event; the royal banquet requires reservation, and the guided tour of the basilica has a small fee.
