The Epiphany bonfire that burns the old woman, with mulled wine and tradition
In Valeggio sul Mincio, in the province of Verona, on Epiphany evening, one of the most deeply rooted traditions in Veneto is renewed: Brusa la Vecia. With La Viola, the Pro Loco lights a large bonfire that symbolically burns the "vecchia" (old woman), meaning the past year, to usher in the new one.
The community of the village gathers around the fire, warmed by vin brulรฉ (mulled wine) and the ever-present panino con el codeghin (sandwich with pork sausage). Music accompanies the convivial moment, in an atmosphere that blends popular ritual and village festival.
The Epiphany bonfire is widespread throughout the Venetian and Lombard plains, where it marks the beginning of the agricultural and propitiatory year. In Valeggio sul Mincio, La Viola is an anticipated event that opens the Pro Loco's calendar of events, located in the heart of the Mincio morainic hills, a few kilometers from Lake Garda.
The 2026 edition of La Viola (Brusa la Vecia) took place on Tuesday, January 6th, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, in the meadow adjacent to the hospital of Valeggio sul Mincio.
The large Epiphany bonfire, organized by Pro Loco Valeggio, symbolically burned the "old woman" to usher in the new year. The evening brought the community together around the fire, with mulled wine, sandwiches with 'el codeghin', and music.
