The rite of the Old Woman
La Vecia Marantega is a popular tradition in Tambre, a municipality in the province of Belluno on the Cansiglio plateau. The "Marantega" is the figure of the Old Woman – similar to the Befana and the late winter Old Woman figure found throughout Veneto – who is symbolically burned to mark the end of the cold season and usher in spring.
Fire, tradition, and community
The highlight is the bonfire around which the community gathers: a rite of fire with strong symbolic value, common to many peasant cultures of the Alpine region, experienced as a moment of celebration and transition. Young and old gather around the flames for an evening that combines atmosphere and village conviviality.

Organized by Pro Loco Tambre, La Vecia Marantega is one of the events that punctuate the calendar of traditions on the Cansiglio plateau. An ancient rite that, in the Belluno Dolomites, continues to keep alive the bond between the community and its cultural roots.
La Vecia Marantega — edition 2026
The 2026 edition of La Vecia Marantega was held in Tambre on Sunday, March 22, at 6:00 PM (date moved from the initial schedule). The popular rite of burning the Old Woman brought the community of the Cansiglio plateau together around the bonfire.
Organized by Pro Loco Tambre, the celebration renewed an ancient late winter tradition, experienced as a moment of celebration and good omen for spring, in the setting of the Belluno Dolomites.

How to get there
Tambre is located on the Cansiglio plateau, in the province of Belluno. By car via the Cansiglio road (Alpago area). Nearest train station: Ponte nelle Alpi / Belluno.
