La Golenata, the kite festival of Berra

The Golenata - Kite Festival is one of the most beloved spring events in Berra, a hamlet of the Municipality of Riva del Po, in the province of Ferrara, in Emilia-Romagna. The event takes place in the evocative ferry square, along Via Penacchiera, directly overlooking the waters of the Po: a perfect natural setting to see dozens of colourful kites fly, carried by the wind of the floodplain.

A day for families

The event, free and outdoors, is designed primarily for children and families. The heart of the festival is the kite competition: young participants register in the early afternoon and compete by flying their kites as high as possible. The competition concludes with an awards ceremony, featuring trophies for the best and a prize for all participants, in the true spirit of a village festival.

The Po's floodplain as a stage

The very name of the festival, "Golenata", refers to the golena (floodplain), the strip of land along the river that represents an iconic landscape in Berra. Flying kites right here, where the wind blows freely along the banks of the Po, is the community's way of celebrating its connection with the great river. The initiative is organized by the Associazione Cultura & Spettacolo Berrese (Berra Culture & Entertainment Association), in collaboration with the local Pro Loco and the patronage of the Municipality of Riva del Po.

Between tradition and socialising

La Golenata combines outdoor play with the typical conviviality of the festivals in the Bassa Ferrarese: while the children chase their kites, adults gather around the food stand to enjoy piadine and spend a spring afternoon together. It is a simple and genuine festival, capable of bringing together the inhabitants of Berra and the surrounding villages in a serene and familiar atmosphere, in an authentic and community-focused corner of the Ferrara region.
