La Befantona in Ton

La Befantona is the festival dedicated to the Epiphany in the Municipality of Ton, in Val di Non (Autonomous Province of Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige). Every January 6th, the event takes place in the square of Vigo di Ton, the municipal capital nestled on the left bank of the Noce stream, just a short distance from the famous Castel Thun, one of the most beautiful and well-preserved castles in Trentino.

An Anaunia Tradition

The festival is promoted by the Ton Cultural Commission together with the Pro Loco Ton and is part of the Municipality's official event calendar. La Befantona, a local and affectionate version of the Befana, arrives in the square to greet the little ones and distribute sweets, candies, and traditional Epiphany stockings. It is an event designed primarily for families and children from Vigo and the surrounding hamlets (Toss, Masi di Vigo, and smaller settlements), who gather together to bid farewell to the Christmas holidays.

Atmosphere and Territory

The setting is typical of the villages in the Upper Val di Non: stone houses, the parish church of the Assumption, and views reaching up toward the silhouette of Castel Thun. La Befantona retains the genuine character of Trentino village festivals, where the sense of community matters more than spectacle. The arrival of the Befana creates a warm, familiar atmosphere, with children eagerly awaiting their treats and adults sharing a final convivial moment before returning to daily life.
