New wine, street food, and folk music in the village of Salza Irpina
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
When the calendar hits mid-November and the sun still offers a few mild days, Salza Irpinaโa village of just over seven hundred residents at 547 meters above sea level in the province of Avellino, Campaniaโprepares for L'Estate di San Martino. For an entire weekend, the small village turns into a grand street party: stalls fill the alleys of the historic center, the aroma of street food mingles with the scent of grape must, and folk music keeps the atmosphere lively until late in the evening.
The tradition is rooted in a local Irpinian saying: "at San Martino, every must becomes wine." Around November 11th, the saint's day, agricultural work in the countryside concludes, and the first barrels are tapped in the cellars. The expression "Estate di San Martino" (Saint Martin's Summer) refers to that brief return of pleasant weather that almost every year interrupts the first cold days of autumn: a perfect opportunity to be outdoors, toast with friends, and gather in the town square.
The undisputed star is the new wine, served young and fragrant alongside dishes from the Irpinian peasant tradition. Everything else revolves around it:
The soundtrack is provided by folk musicโin Campania, this almost always means drums, accordions, and danceable rhythms. It is played outdoors, moving from one street to another, and the audience never stays still for long. It is a community celebration rather than a formal show, with local families out in the streets, improvised tables, and illuminated alleys filling up as the evening sets in.
L'Estate di San Martino is not an isolated event: despite its small size, Salza Irpina boasts a busy calendar of gastronomic events that are highly popular throughout the province. Among the most well-known are:
L'Estate di San Martino ideally closes this sequence, bringing the community out into the streets one last time before winter.
The last documented edition took place on Saturday, November 15 and Sunday, November 16, 2025. At the moment, the organizers have not yet released the dates or the program for the 2026 edition. As is common with many festivals in small Irpinian towns, announcements are usually made just a few weeks in advance via the town's social media channels and local press. If you are planning a visit, it is best to keep an eye on mid-November and check for updates before traveling.
Salza Irpina borders Chiusano di San Domenico, Parolise, San Potito Ultra, Sorbo Serpico, and Volturara Irpina, nestled in a landscape of vineyard-covered hills and chestnut forests at the foot of the Terminio massif. From here, you can reach the wine villages of the Sabato and Calore valleys in just a few minutes, while Avellino is about fifteen kilometers away. A November weekend in this part of Campania means open cellars, roasted chestnuts, black truffles, and some of the greenest landscapes in the South.
At the moment, no official date has been published for L'Estate di San Martino 2026 in Salza Irpina (province of Avellino, Campania). The last documented edition was held on November 15-16, 2025, which transformed the village into a grand street party.
As with many festivals in small Irpinian towns, the program is released a few weeks in advance via the town's social media channels and local press. Those wishing to attend should keep an eye on mid-November and verify updates before traveling: we will update this page as soon as information is confirmed.
Salza Irpina is located about 15 km east of Avellino. By car: take the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, exit at Avellino Est, then follow provincial roads toward Parolise and San Potito Ultra. By train and bus: the reference station is Avellino, connected by bus lines to the towns of the Sabato valley; however, a car remains the most convenient option. Nearest airport: Naples-Capodichino, about 60 km away.
The festival takes place in the historic center of the village, which is largely pedestrianized for the occasion: it is best to leave your car in the parking areas on the outskirts of the village and continue on foot.
In November, Irpinia can be mild during the day but quite cold in the evening: a jacket is essential. Wear comfortable shoes for the sloping alleys. Tastings are paid for directly at the stalls, so it is best to have cash on hand.
