The oldest and largest Krampus parade in South Tyrol

In the heart of the Upper Puster Valley, the municipality of Dobbiaco/Toblach (Province of Bolzano, Trentino-South Tyrol) hosts one of the most anticipated and feared events of the South Tyrolean winter calendar every December: the Krampuslauf Toblach, or Krampus parade. Recognized as the oldest and largest in South Tyrol, the event has been organized since 1996 by the Foir Toifl Tobla association (literally "Fire-Devil-Dobbiaco") and attracts thousands of spectators from across South Tyrol and neighboring Alpine countries every year.
In Alpine tradition, the Krampus are the demonic figures who, according to legend, accompany Saint Nicholas on his journey: while the saint rewards good children, the horned devils with fur coats, hand-carved wooden masks, and large cowbells have the task of frightening and punishing the wicked. In Dobbiaco, this custom is expressed in all its scenic power, with about 600 figures—Krampus, devils, and costumed characters—arriving from South Tyrol, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland.
At twilight, the procession comes to life: starting from St. Johannesstraße, the groups march through the town to the historic center, where Saint Nicholas distributes small gifts to the children. About twenty historical groups, consisting of artisans who hand-craft their costumes and masks, bring the parade to life with light effects, pyrotechnics, and traditional music, in an atmosphere suspended between fairy tale and legend. For safety reasons, every Krampus is required to visibly wear an identification number, a result of the rigorous measures adopted over the years by the organizing association.
To allow families and children to enjoy the event in peace, the organizers provide special "Krampus-free" zones, sheltered areas where one can watch the parade in a less intense environment. At the end of the procession, the evening continues with a grand party in a heated tent, featuring music and South Tyrolean gastronomic specialties.
Held during the Advent season, the Dobbiaco Krampus parade complements the Christmas markets and the winter atmosphere of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, offering visitors an authentic experience of South Tyrolean folklore. It is a unique opportunity to discover one of the most deeply rooted customs of the Alpine valleys, set in one of the most evocative natural landscapes in Trentino-South Tyrol.
The 2026 edition of the Dobbiaco Krampus parade does not yet have an official date. According to tradition, the event is expected to take place on a Sunday in early December 2026 in the town's historic center, starting from St. Johannesstraße. The detailed program and schedule will be communicated by the organization in the weeks leading up to the event.
Dobbiaco is located in the Upper Puster Valley, along the SS49 state road. By car: take the A22 motorway exit at Bressanone, then follow the SS49 towards Val Pusteria. By train: the Dobbiaco station is served by the Val Pusteria line (Fortezza–San Candido–Lienz).
The parade is traditionally held on a Sunday in early December, in the evening (roughly from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM). Dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced.
