Petal carpets and the Corpus Domini procession in the historic center of Itri
The Itri Flower Festival is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Itri, a town in the province of Latina, in southern Lazio, located halfway between the Fondi plain and the Gulf of Gaeta. On the day of Corpus Domini, the entire Via della Repubblica is covered in large floral carpets made exclusively from petals, seeds, leaves, and natural materials. Other displays decorate the historic districts of the village: the Visinali along Corso Appio Claudio, Largo Staurenghi, Piazza Sant'Angelo, and the Piazzetta Luigina Sinapi.
Work begins long before the event. For weeks, groups of volunteers, associations, and local families dedicate themselves to collecting and sorting flowers, followed by the delicate task of stripping the petals: they are separated by color and kept cool until the eve of the festival. On the night before the event, the sketches are traced on the ground and filled in petal by petal, so that at dawn, the town wakes up already in full color. It is a deliberately ephemeral art: the paintings live for only a few hours and are consumed by the passage of the procession.
The highlight is the Eucharistic procession, which in the evening departs from the Church of San Michele Arcangelo and crosses the historic center, walking over the flower carpets. By noon, religious authorities bless the floral displays. It is a ritual that binds the religious and artistic dimensions together: the blessing of the floral paintings by ecclesiastical authorities is, for the community, the true act of presenting the work.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover local gastronomy. Along the route, you will find stalls and tastings of typical local products: brined olives and Itrana olive pรขtรฉ, bread and extra virgin olive oil, sausages, and fresh cheeses from the Riviera of Ulysses. During the same days, guided tours are usually available for the town's monuments and archaeological sites, from the medieval Castle with its Cylindrical Tower to the Museum of Brigandage, dedicated to the figure of Fra' Diavolo, the famous brigand born right here in Itri.
Born in the late eighties, the Flower Festival has grown to become one of the main tourist attractions of the Municipality of Itri and one of the most well-known flower festivals in Lazio, alongside the one in Genzano. Its value, however, remains primarily collective: associations, volunteers, businesses, and ordinary citizens work side by side for days. The municipal administration, which coordinates the event with the Pro Loco of Itri, describes it as a tradition capable of uniting faith, art, identity, and a sense of belonging.
The date follows the liturgical calendar and therefore falls on a different weekend each year, between late May and the second half of June. We recommend arriving in the morning, when the paintings are freshly completed and the colors are most vivid, and staying until the evening to witness the procession. The village is easily explored on foot, but the streets are narrow and uphill: comfortable shoes are recommended.
The 2026 event was concentrated on Sunday, June 7, the solemnity of Corpus Domini, featuring twenty-three floral works dedicated to social and spiritual messages. As per tradition, the composition work began before dawn, so that by the morning, the floral carpets were already complete along Via della Repubblica, the heart of the event, and in the historic center districts.
The day alternated between viewing the displays, the blessing of the carpets at noon, tastings of local products, and guided tours of the village's monuments, culminating in the evening Eucharistic procession, which started from the Church of San Michele Arcangelo and continued along the flower-strewn streets.
Mayor Andrea Di Biase expressed great satisfaction with the success of the event and the participation of the volunteers, emphasizing that the Flower Festival is "a tradition that deeply belongs to our community" and is capable of uniting faith, art, identity, and a sense of belonging.
In the preceding days, flower cutting and petal preparation took place, open to volunteer participation.
By car: A1 motorway, exit at Cassino or Frosinone, then take the SS Appia (SS7) towards Formia-Gaeta; Itri is located along the Appia between Fondi and Formia. About 2 hours from Rome.
By train: Formia-Gaeta station on the Rome-Naples line (Frecce and Intercity trains), then a local bus to Itri (about 20 minutes).
During the Flower Festival, the historic center is closed to traffic: you can park in the areas along the main road and on the outskirts of the town, then continue on foot.
Visiting the floral carpets and participating in the procession are free. Only tastings and potential museum entrance fees are subject to payment.
