Float parades, costumes, and music through the streets of Itri
The Itri Carnival is the annual event that, between the end of winter and the beginning of spring, brings a festive and collective spirit to the center of Itriโa town in the province of Latina, in southern Lazio. This is not a carnival built for mass tourism: it is a local festival born from the desire of associations and spontaneous local groups to get involved by building floats, sewing costumes, and filling the streets with music.
The heart of the event is the float parade. These are works created in the preceding months by volunteers, amateur craftsmen, and local youth using papier-mรขchรฉ, wood, and a lot of patience. Each float carries a theme, often ironic or tied to current events, and is accompanied by a costumed group that dances and brings the route to life. It is an entirely community-driven production: those watching the floats pass by will recognize their neighbors, their children's schoolmates, and members of local community clubs.
The gathering point for floats and participants is Via Don Virgilio Mancini. From here, the costumed procession moves through the main streets of Itri's center, following a route that touches the town's most vibrant spots. When the parade ends, the party doesn't stop: there are closing musical entertainment sessions, with music and dancing in the square that extend the afternoon into the evening.
Itri is a village nestled at the foot of its medieval castle, in a strategic position between the coast of the Gulf of Gaeta and the hinterland of the Aurunci Mountains. A city of oil and Itrana olives, also known for the figure of the brigand Fra Diavolo, it preserves a historic center of alleys, arches, and stairways that maintains a cozy atmosphere in winter. The Carnival is the moment when this intimate dimension opens up and becomes an urban spectacle, with windows overlooking the parade and children in costumes running in front of the floats.
The Itri Carnival is designed primarily for families. The afternoon schedule, free admission, and the widespread nature of the event make it suitable even for small children, who naturally remain under the responsibility of their parents during the parades. Confetti, streamers, costumed groups, and music create a reassuring and lively environment, very far from the logic of ticketed events.
The Itri event is part of a rich carnival calendar that involves the entire southern Pontine area: in the same weeks, floats parade in Formia, Santi Cosma e Damiano, and other towns in the Gulf. Those staying in the area can easily build a small itinerary of local carnivals, each with its own style and tradition. Itri stands out for its spontaneous tone and strong roots in the town's associative fabric.

The Municipality of Itri officially scheduled two days of festivities for 2026, in line with the tradition that links the Itri Carnival to Carnival Sunday and Shrove Tuesday. Both parades started at 2:30 PM with a gathering on Via Don Virgilio Mancini, where floats, costumed groups, and families assembled.
From there, the procession moved through the main streets of the town center, amidst colors, music, and costumes created by associations, spontaneous groups, and local citizens. At the end of the route, the party continued with musical entertainment: Sunday, February 15, in Piazzale G. Rodari, and Tuesday, February 17, in Piazza Umberto I.
The event, free and open to all, confirmed its family-oriented nature: children in costumes were the protagonists of the two days, under the responsibility of their parents during the passage of the floats.
By car: Take the Itri exit from the SS7 Appia, or the A1 motorway taking the Cassino exit and following the SS630 towards Formia. Itri is approximately 12 km from Formia and 15 km from Gaeta.
By train: Formia-Gaeta station on the Rome-Naples line, then local bus to Itri (about 20 minutes).
During the parades, the center is closed to traffic: it is advisable to leave your car in the peripheral parking areas and walk to Via Don Virgilio Mancini.
Free admission to all parades and closing musical events.
