About Isolstizio

Isolstizio is a festival celebrating the traditions, folklore, and cultural energy of Isola del Gran Sasso d'Italia, nestled in the heart of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. Set in the charming Piazza Contea di Pagliara within the Castello dell'Isola, the event blends live music, art, sports, children's games, and local gastronomy. The highlight is the ancestral 'Compare a Fiori' ritual, linked to St. John's Eve, which renews bonds of friendship within the community. After an eleven-year hiatus due to earthquake damage, the festival has returned to bring the village to life.

Isolstizio: the return of a long-awaited festival

Isolstizio is one of the most iconic events in Isola del Gran Sasso d'Italia, a town in the province of Teramo, Abruzzo, located at the gateway to the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. Launched in 2011, the festival takes place in the historic and scenic Piazza Contea di Pagliara, in the heart of the Castello dell'Isola, a venue that hosted its successful early editions. After an eleven-year wait caused by earthquake damage to the ancient village and the lengthy reconstruction of the historic center, Isolstizio has finally returned.

An ancient ritual linked to the summer solstice

The festival's central theme is its connection to the summer solstice and the feast of St. John, a moment steeped in symbolism within Abruzzese folk culture. The heart of the event is the Compare a Fiori ritual, an ancestral custom representing a gesture of great social value: through it, participants renew and strengthen bonds of friendship and brotherhood within the community, exchanging symbolic gifts and the special 'compare' beer.

Music, art, and folk traditions

For two days, the historic center transforms into an open-air stage. The program features live concerts, performances by musical and folk groups, piano bars, dramatic readings, and cultural insights into Abruzzese solstice rituals. The Isola del Gran Sasso Folkloric Choir is a staple, alongside artistic installations that decorate the village's alleys and squares.

  • Live concerts and music until late at night
  • DJ sets and cocktails in Largo Sant'Antonio
  • Exhibitions, art installations, and children's readings
  • Food and wine stalls featuring local flavors

For families and children

Isolstizio is also designed with the little ones in mind. Among the most popular activities is the Caccia al Mazzamurillo, a game for all ages dedicated to catching the mischievous goblins of Abruzzese tradition, with increasingly exciting prizes. The historic center also offers a dedicated play area, games, and a relaxation corner for families.

A community-organized festival

The event is promoted by the APS Le Tre Porte association together with numerous local groups, under the patronage of the Municipality of Isola del Gran Sasso d'Italia and the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. The return of Isolstizio testifies to the collective commitment of an entire community to recover and promote its traditions after difficult years, restoring one of its most cherished festivals to the village.
