The journey that becomes song on the footsteps of the Poor Man, Esanatoglia stage
InCanto sulle Vie di Francesco is a travelling review that since 2013 has retraced the ancient paths linked to Saint Francis of Assisi and his first companions, singing. Born in Valfabbrica on the initiative of journalist and theologian Diego Mecenero, the event is now promoted by A.R.C.UM. (Regional Association of Choirs of Umbria) and each year touches villages, churches, and sacred places scattered throughout Umbria, Marche, Lazio, and Tuscany. The event has two souls: one that walks, amidst landscapes and historic routes, and one that sings, with choirs performing in the most significant places along the route.
Among the stages of the thirteenth edition is Esanatoglia, a small and charming Municipality in the Province of Macerata, in the Marche region, nestled on the slopes of the Monti Sibillini along the springs of the Esino river. Here, the event starts from Piazza del Comune and unfolds through musical moments, readings, and a suggestive walk leading to the Franciscan complex located on the hill overlooking the town. The combination of the choirs' singing and the silence of the sacred places offers the public an intense experience, where music, faith, and landscape merge.
The review rediscovers the spirituality, history, and traditions of the territory by following the example of Francis, who sang the praises of Creation while travelling through cities and countryside. Walkers and choristers share an itinerary made of singing, nature, and Franciscan stories, reconnecting the thread that links the villages of Central Italy to the memory of the Saint. The edition is part of the celebrations for the Franciscan eight-hundredth anniversary, dedicated to the figure of the Poor Man and his universal message.
The journey of all the stages ideally leads to the grand final event, hosted in the Seraphic city of Assisi: the participating choirs gather to conclude the journey in one of the most evocative spiritual and artistic settings in the world, the Upper Basilica of Saint Francis. A choral finale that gives meaning to the entire review and seals its spirit of community.
The thirteenth edition of InCanto sulle Vie di Francesco stopped in Esanatoglia (MC) on Sunday, May 24, 2026, starting at 4:00 PM with a meeting point in Piazza del Comune. The day combined musical moments and a walk towards the Franciscan complex overlooking the town, following the established formula of the review which alternates choral singing, readings, and walking. The 2026 edition was part of the celebrations for the eight-hundredth anniversary of Saint Francis, confirming the event's travelling vocation across Umbria, Marche, Lazio, and Tuscany. The route of all stages led to the grand final event on June 20, 2026, in Assisi, in the Upper Basilica of Saint Francis.
The detailed musical program of the stage (participating choirs and pieces) is defined by the A.R.C.UM. organization closer to the event. The review continues with the other stages of the journey and culminates in the grand final event on June 20, 2026, in Assisi, in the Upper Basilica of Saint Francis, with the choirs gathered.
