The celebration of the prized black fig in the garden of Villa Frova in Caneva
At the end of August, when the orchards at the foot of the Castle are laden and ripe, Caneva celebrates its most precious product: the Figo Moro da Caneva, a fig with dark skin, red and very sweet pulp, protected by a consortium that has revived a nearly extinct cultivation over the years. From a handful of producers, it has grown to about fifty consortium members and around two thousand plants: a small agricultural rebirth that the "In Campagna col Figo Moro" event stages in the most convivial way possible.
The heart of the event is the garden of Villa Frova, in the centre of Caneva, which for an entire day is filled with food and wine stalls, sales stands for fresh Figo Moro and its derivatives, jams, sauces, and pastry products. Visitors stroll among the exhibitors, participate in guided tours of the villa and its surroundings, and discover how this fruit pairs equally well with sweet and savoury dishes.
In addition to the gastronomic aspect, the festival offers experiences that connect the product to its landscape. You can book fruit picking experiences in the Figo Moro orchards, to personally feel the effort and care behind each crate of figs, and electric boat trips to the Palù di Livenza, the UNESCO-recognized inland bog-lagoon, a few kilometres from the town, where the silence of the water tells another story of the territory.
The day unfolds with entertainment for families and children from the morning, guided tastings of local products, and comedy shows: in recent years, the famous I Papu, a beloved Friulian comedy duo, have been the stars. Towards the evening, the catering service begins with regional dishes and specialties based on Figo Moro, while visitors enjoy an aperitif in the villa's courtyard. The event is organized with the collaboration of the Municipality of Caneva, the Chamber of Commerce Pordenone-Udine, and the Protection Consortium, under the patronage of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region.
For 2026, "In Campagna col Figo Moro" reaches its tenth edition, confirming itself as a key late-summer event for lovers of food and wine and nature in Western Friuli. The indicated date is Sunday, August 30, 2026, still to be officially confirmed by the organizers.
The structure of the day follows that of previous editions: morning opening of the Villa Frova garden with stalls and sales stands for Figo Moro and its derivatives, guided tastings, villa tours, fruit picking experiences in the orchards, and electric boat trips to the Palù di Livenza. In the afternoon, shows and entertainment, and in the evening, catering with dishes based on black figs.
The detailed program for the tenth edition will be announced in the coming weeks by the organizers. Based on previous editions, the day typically unfolds as follows:
How to get there: Caneva is located in the far west of Friuli, in the province of Pordenone, a few minutes from the Veneto border and the Sacile-Ovest motorway exit (A28). Villa Frova is in the town centre.
Admission: access to the festival area is free; guided tastings, picking experiences, and boat trips may require booking.
Accommodation: accommodation facilities in Caneva, Sacile, and the nearby Conegliano area.
