The international auteur animated film festival in the historic center of Conversano
Imaginaria is the International Animated Film Festival that, since 2003, has transformed the historic center of Conversano—a medieval town in the Metropolitan City of Bari—into an international capital of animation every summer. Organized by the Atalante ETS association under the artistic direction of Luigi Iovane, it is the first and only festival of its kind in Puglia and one of the most authoritative events on the Italian cultural scene.
The festival celebrates animation as an adult and visionary art form, far removed from the stereotypes of cinema for children only: short films, music videos, experimental works, and auteur films created with diverse techniques, from traditional drawing to stop-motion, and from 2D digital to 3D and visual effects.
Since 2025, Imaginaria has been part of the list of Academy Award-qualifying festivals: the winner of the main competition for Best Animated Short Film is eligible for Oscar nomination. This prestigious recognition places the small town of Conversano on the international animation map, alongside the industry's major events.
The program is divided into numerous competitive and special sections:
The magic of Imaginaria also stems from its venues: evening screenings are held outdoors in the cloister of the San Benedetto Complex, among the columns, gardens, and terraces of the Benedictine monastery, while other events enliven the Aragonese Castle, the San Giuseppe Complex, and the Cathedral square. Works are presented in their original language with Italian subtitles, offering an immersive experience that blends contemporary visual storytelling with ancient architectural beauty.
Each edition attracts directors, authors, and enthusiasts from all over the world to Conversano, confirming Imaginaria as one of the most original cultural experiences of the Puglian summer.
The twenty-fourth edition of Imaginaria takes place in Conversano from August 23 to 29, 2026, featuring traditional open-air evening screenings in the cloister of the San Benedetto Complex and other monumental spaces in the historic center.
The 2026 Career Awards celebrate two leading authors of international animation: Suzie Templeton, Oscar winner for Peter and the Wolf and a master of stop-motion, and Joanna Quinn, one of the most celebrated British animators and directors.
The program includes the Official Selection with international competitions, the Imaginaria Kids section and Panorama Kids retrospective for younger audiences, Special Events with guests such as Gaia Banfi, AKA5HA, and Ana Carla Maza, the musical section Mutosonoro, the FAN section, and exhibitions by illustrators Jean Mallard and Clément Thoby.
Conversano is located about 30 km southeast of Bari. By car, it can be reached via the SS16 Adriatica or the SP237. By train, it is connected by the Ferrovie del Sud Est, with the station just a few minutes from the historic center. The nearest airport is Bari-Palese (Karol Wojtyła), about 40 km away.
In previous editions, admission to evening screenings in the San Benedetto cloister was approximately 5 euros, while children's programs in the Giardino dei Limoni were priced at about 3 euros. Exhibitions and some side events are free of charge.
Screenings are outdoors: light clothing is recommended for summer evenings. The historic center offers numerous restaurants and accommodations; booking in advance during the festival period is recommended.
