About PMIR

Il Primo Maggio in Ritardo (PMIR) is a free-entry music and cultural festival that brings Calitri, in Alta Irpinia, to life every summer. Founded in 2022 by a group of local youths, 2026 marks its fifth edition: over ten hours of live music and DJ sets, from late afternoon until deep into the night, featuring a program that blends indie, singer-songwriter, electronic, and folk sounds. Beyond the concerts, the festival champions causes such as environmental protection, the fight against inequality, labor rights, and the future of inland areas.

Il Primo Maggio in Ritardo: when the party arrives in August

Il Primo Maggio in Ritardo, known to everyone by its acronym PMIR, is the music and cultural festival that has been energizing Calitriโ€”a town in the Alta Irpinia region of the Avellino province, in the heart of inland Campaniaโ€”since 2022. The name says it all: openly inspired by the major May Day concerts in Rome and Taranto, the event deliberately chooses to arrive "late" in the height of summer to avoid overlapping with those dates and to bring a full day of music, participation, and dialogue to a village of just a few thousand inhabitants.

It is organized by the Associazione Il Primo Maggio in Ritardo, born from the commitment of a group of young people from Calitri determined to address the professional and cultural isolation that many inland Italian communities face daily. The festival is self-financed and built through the work of volunteers and the participation of the local community: admission has always been completely free, a choice claimed as part of the project's identity and a rejection of purely commercial logic.

The 2026 edition: the fifth

On Saturday, August 8, 2026, PMIR reaches its fifth edition, hosted in Calitri at Piazzale Giolitti, following previous years at Arena Madonnelle, the 3,000-square-meter green space in the town center. The formula remains the tried-and-tested one: a sonic marathon that kicks off in the late afternoon and ends late at night, with over ten artists taking turns on stage.

The most anticipated face is the return of Viscardi, who grew up in front of the PMIR audience in past editions and is back on stage today following his participation in X Factor on Paola Iezzi's team. The evening opens with two very young local artists, DJ Vito and Peppe Pannisco, selected via a public call: a detail that perfectly captures the spirit of the festival, which is dedicated to bringing local talent to the forefront.

The program: over ten hours of music

The 2026 lineup spans diverse genres, from house DJ sets to singer-songwriter tracks, from indie to soul, and urban and Latin sounds for the late-night finale:

  • DJ Vito and Peppe Pannisco โ€” opening by local Calitri artists
  • Franco Beltrami โ€” house DJ set
  • Poster Shop โ€” synth-pop and funk
  • Gabriele Spira โ€” indie pop and R'n'B
  • Via Mercanti โ€” singer-songwriter
  • Dinรฌche โ€” electronic pop and urban
  • Marta Emme โ€” pop, soul, and jazz
  • Viscardi โ€” R'n'B and neo-soul
  • Gli Orsacchiotti โ€” indie, punk, reggae, and pop
  • Sonoria Live โ€” live band
  • Claudio Lettieri and Francesco Natale โ€” DJ sets
  • El Caribe โ€” closing urban-Latin DJ set

Not just music: environment, rights, and inland areas

PMIR is more than just a concert lineup. Since its first edition, the festival has focused on specific themes: environmental protection, the fight against inequality, labor rights, and the future of the country's inland areas. The organizers describe it as a "collective act of resistance and beauty" that aims to build a different kind of time: slower, more authentic, and closer to people. The festival thus serves as a reference point for the Southern Apennine territories, often on the margins of major cultural circuits.

Calitri and Alta Irpinia

Calitri is a stone village overlooking the Ofanto valley, on the border between Campania, Puglia, and Basilicata. Its historic center is a maze of alleys, cave-houses, and stairways leading up to Borgo Castello, home to the museum dedicated to ceramics, a craft tradition that has made the town famous. Surrounding it is an Irpinia of castles, archaeological sites, and Apennine landscapes, with a distinct cuisine: caciocavallo irpino, black truffle, chestnuts, and the great wines of the Avellino province, from Aglianico to Fiano.

For those arriving from outside, PMIR is also an excellent opportunity to discover a piece of Campania far from the coast and the most beaten paths.

Free entry and food area

Admission to the event is free and open, with no ticket or reservation required. A street food area is set up on-site with pizzas, sandwiches, and a drink corner, allowing you to experience the entire musical marathon without having to leave. Those who wish to support the project can do so through the partnership formulas promoted by the association.

PMIR โ€” edition 2026

The fifth edition of Il Primo Maggio in Ritardo takes place on Saturday, August 8, 2026, in Calitri at Piazzale Giolitti, with free admission. Over ten hours of music, from late afternoon until 2:30 AM, featuring thirteen artists and DJs: from the opening by local Calitri talents DJ Vito and Peppe Pannisco to the urban-Latin closing by El Caribe, including the return of Viscardi after his X Factor experience.

PMIR 2026: the fifth edition

On Saturday, August 8, 2026, Calitri hosts the fifth edition of Il Primo Maggio in Ritardo at Piazzale Giolitti. The event confirms the formula that has made this Alta Irpinia festival recognizable: a long day of music with free admission, built by the work of volunteers and the participation of the local community.

The program alternates DJ sets and live concerts for over ten hours, with a lineup ranging from synth-pop to singer-songwriter, indie to soul, and electronics to urban sounds. Alongside the music, the themes that PMIR has championed since 2022 remain central: environmental protection, the fight against inequality, labor rights, and the future of inland areas. A street food area with pizzas, sandwiches, and a drink corner completes the evening.
