When the village becomes a nativity scene

Every year, between late December and Epiphany, the historic center of Castro dei Volsci — one of the most picturesque villages in the Ciociaria area, in the province of Frosinone (Lazio) — dims its modern lights to glow with the warmth of Roman torches. Established in 1995, Il Paese Diventa Presepe is now one of the most famous and appreciated Christmas events in Lazio, drawing thousands of visitors to the streets of the ancient village.

Over a hundred actors, forty scenes

The route winds along Via Civita, through alleys, arches, cellars, stables, and charming corners of the village. More than a hundred costumed actors bring to life about forty scenes that evoke the daily existence of a 19th-century farming community: ancient trades come alive before the eyes of visitors, while the sound of bagpipes accompanies the journey. The representation culminates in the Nativity, featuring the Holy Family and a real-life infant.

The flavors of the local tradition

Along the route, there is no shortage of tastings of local products: fritters, sausages, chestnuts, and fried pizzas, all accompanied by fine local wine. It is a perfect opportunity to discover the traditional cuisine of Ciociaria in a warm and convivial atmosphere.

A project recognized by the Lazio Region

The initiative is organized by the Il Paese diventa Presepe Association in collaboration with the Municipality of Castro dei Volsci and the local Pro Loco. The cultural value of the event has been officially recognized by the Lazio Region, which has supported the project with significant funding. Admission is always free for the public.

A village made for a nativity scene

Castro dei Volsci is a medieval village perched on a hill in the Sacco Valley, dominated by the ruins of its castle and the statue of Christ the Redeemer watching over the town. Its urban structure — made of stone staircases, portals, cellars, and sudden open spaces — makes the historic center the ideal natural stage for a living nativity: there is no need for artificial sets, as the village itself becomes the nativity. The Christmas season, with its soft lights and the crisp air of the Ciociarian winter, amplifies the charm of the route, turning a simple walk into a journey back in time, perfect for families with children.
