Exclusive craft beer premieres at Mercato Centrale Rome, kicking off Italy Beer Week
Every year in early March, Mercato Centrale Rome—the sprawling food hall overlooking Termini Station in the Esquilino district, in the heart of Rome (Lazio)—hosts Il Ballo delle Debuttanti. This festival dedicated to craft beer officially opens Italy Beer Week, the national craft beer celebration organized by Cronache di Birra. For three days, the Mercato Centrale transforms into a stage where Italy's top breweries present their freshest creations.
The heart of the event is the concept of the debutante beer: each guest brewery creates a unique, original recipe specifically for the occasion, which is presented to the public for the very first time during the festival. Alongside these novelties, each producer brings a selection of their best draft beers, offering a complete overview of their style and brewing philosophy.
Il Ballo delle Debuttanti is more than just a tasting event. The program includes gastronomic pairings between beers and the offerings from the Mercato Centrale's artisanal stalls, workshops led by industry experts and journalists, and opportunities to meet the master brewers, who share the secrets behind their creations. It is a valuable opportunity to get an up-close look at the craftsmanship behind every glass.
Its location at Mercato Centrale, just steps from the Termini platforms, makes the event easily accessible from across the city and for those arriving by train from outside Rome. The informal and convivial atmosphere of the food hall, with its artisanal shops and food stalls, provides the perfect backdrop for an event that combines brewing culture, quality, and social connection.
Il Ballo delle Debuttanti kicks off Italy Beer Week, the successor to the historic Settimana della Birra Artigianale: a week of events spread across Italy, organized by geographical area, dedicated to promoting the culture and pride of Italian craft beer. For those unable to reach Rome, a special box featuring the debut beers of the edition has been made available in recent years, in collaboration with dedicated online shops.
From March 14 to 16, 2026, Mercato Centrale Rome hosted a new edition of Il Ballo delle Debuttanti, the event that kicked off Italy Beer Week 2026 (March 16-22). Once again, guest breweries presented their debut beers—original recipes created for the occasion—alongside a selection of their best draft offerings.
The program featured a mix of open tastings, pairings with the market's artisanal stalls, guided workshops, and meet-the-brewer sessions. The collaboration with an online shop was also confirmed, allowing those unable to reach Rome to receive a box of the edition's debut beers at home.
