The summer festival of the Accademia Filarmonica Romana, blending music, cultures, and global traditions
The Giardini della Filarmonica is the summer season of the Accademia Filarmonica Romana, one of Italy's oldest and most prestigious musical institutions, founded in 1821. Each year, between late June and early July, the gardens and the Sala Casella at the historic Via Flaminia 118 address transform into an open-air stage, nestled in a quiet, verdant corner just a short walk from Piazza del Popolo in Rome, the capital of the Lazio region.
The festival offers a journey that blends classical, traditional, electronic, and jazz music with dance and theater, featuring artists from all over the world. The well-established format features a double evening event: the first at 8:00 PM in the intimate setting of the Sala Casella, and the second at 9:30 PM outdoors, under the stars in the gardens. This creates a continuous dialogue between the European classical repertoire and the ancestral sounds of distant cultures, from Japan to Indonesia, Iran to Colombia, and Argentina to Poland.
Founded in 1821 by a group of music enthusiasts and re-established in 1946 under the artistic direction of composer Alfredo Casella, the Academy is housed in the historic Casina Vagnuzzi on Via Flaminia. Today, it organizes international-level concerts, chamber music, ballets, and musical theater performances, supported by an intense educational program through its own music school and a vast library of scores and manuscripts.
Thanks to affordable ticket prices and the intimate setting of the gardens, the festival has become a beloved tradition for Romans and visitors alike who are looking for a refined and peaceful alternative to the city's summer nights. Alongside major international names, the festival also dedicates space to participatory projects involving amateur musicians and dancers, celebrating the pure joy of performing together.
The 2026 season of the Accademia Filarmonica Romana was titled "Roots", a theme conceived by artistic director Domenico Turi as an exploration of what anchors us: written and oral traditions, ancestral sounds, and languages and rhythms passed down through generations. The Academy President is Paolo Baratta. From June 18 to July 2, 2026, the Sala Casella and the Via Flaminia gardens hosted 24 concerts and performances, following the usual double evening format.
The opening night on June 18 combined a musical toast with a concert by Paolo Angeli on his 25-string prepared Sardinian guitar. Highlights included: an Indonesian Gamelan orchestra (June 19), the Japanese drums of Munedaiko, the three Yahiro brothers with a viola quartet (June 21), the harp of Lucie Spedicato (Bucchi Prize 2025), and the Atom String Quartet from Poland (June 23), the theatrical performance Per futili motivi directed by Marco Carniti (June 24), and pianist Luca Ciammarughi bridging Mahler and Bowie (June 25).
On June 26, Persian music by sisters Leila and Sara Shirvani with Ghazal Ansarirad and Sahba Motallebi took the stage; the final days of July 1 and 2 featured Argentine tango, the Hans Werner Henze centenary, Brazil, and a tribute to Pirandello, with a grand finale by a Colombian Latin band.
Alongside international headliners, the edition relaunched the Musica Amata and the new Danza Amata projects, dedicated to amateur musicians and dancers performing for the pure love of art, in the spirit of a shared musical community.
The Accademia Filarmonica Romana is located at Via Flaminia 118, Rome, just a short walk from Piazza del Popolo. By metro, take Line A to the Flaminio stop and continue on foot; numerous bus lines run along Via Flaminia and Viale Tiziano. Parking in the area is limited, so public transport is highly recommended.
Tickets for individual performances are affordably priced (approximately 5.50 to 26 euros, including booking fees) and can be purchased online via Vivaticket or at the Academy box office. For info and reservations: call +39 342 9550100 or email [email protected].
Performances in the gardens are held outdoors, so comfortable clothing is recommended. Always check the updated program and schedule on the official website, filarmonicaromana.org.
