Easter traditions in the UNESCO-listed Baroque village of the Val di Catania
In the heart of the Val di Noto, in the province of Catania, the Baroque village of Militello in Val di Cataniaโa recognized UNESCO World Heritage siteโobserves Holy Week as one of the most profound expressions of its religious and cultural identity. For several days, the streets of the historic center, church squares, and 18th-century basilicas become the stage for centuries-old rites, carefully preserved and passed down by local confraternities.
The rites begin on Holy Wednesday with the procession of the Ecce Homo, carried through the streets by the confreres of the SS. Sacramento. It is the first act of a devotional journey that leads the community toward the drama of the Passion.
Maundy Thursday is marked by the evocative nocturnal procession to Mount Calvary and the living Stations of the Cross, which reenact the scenes of the Passion against the village's monumental backdrop. The Church of the SS. Crocifisso al Calvario, built on Mount Caruso to topographically mirror the Golgotha of Jerusalem, serves as the focal point of this devotion.
The most intense day is Good Friday. The Crucifixion of the Christ effigy is renewed, followed in the evening by the Deposition from the Cross ceremony, widely considered one of the most moving and devout in all of Eastern Sicily. An articulated statue of Christ is detached from the cross and laid in an urn, while the traditional Popule meus chant resonates within the Mother Basilica. The procession of the Dead Christ then winds through the city streets, accompanied by the Archconfraternity of the SS. Crocifisso al Calvarioโa society founded in 1616โwith its precious gold-leaf vestments and intricate embroidery.
The cycle of rites concludes on Easter Sunday with the joyful procession of the Risen Christ, which transforms mourning into celebration and restores the full meaning of the Easter rebirth to the community.
Experiencing Holy Week in Militello also means immersing yourself in one of Italy's most beautiful villages, rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake in the late Sicilian Baroque style that earned the Val di Noto its UNESCO recognition. The processions wind through churches, portals, and staircases that provide a natural stage for one of the most emotional Easter celebrations in the Catania area.
The 2026 edition followed the liturgical calendar with Holy Wednesday, April 1st (Ecce Homo procession by the SS. Sacramento confreres), Maundy Thursday, April 2nd (nocturnal procession to Mount Calvary and living Stations of the Cross), Good Friday, April 3rd with the Crucifixion, the Deposition from the Cross, and the procession of the Dead Christ organized by the Archconfraternity of the SS. Crocifisso al Calvario, and Easter Sunday, April 5th with the procession of the Risen Christ. The rites confirmed their status as one of the most heartfelt Easter events in the province of Catania.
Militello in Val di Catania can be reached by car via the A19 / SS417 (Catania-Gela), taking the exit toward Caltagirone-Scordia, about an hour from Catania. The train station is on the Caltagirone-Catania line. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa.
The rites take place during Holy Week, from Holy Wednesday to Easter Sunday. In 2026, Good Friday falls on April 3rd and Easter on April 5th.
