The Passion of Christ re-enacted by torchlight in the medieval village
The Re-enactment of the Via Crucis of Montegridolfo is one of the most heartfelt events of Good Friday in the Valconca, in the province of Rimini. Every year, the small Municipality of Montegridolfo, listed among The most beautiful villages in Italy, turns off its public lighting and entrusts its medieval walls to the sole light of torches, braziers, and candles. In this intimate and evocative atmosphere, a procession of figures in period costume retraces the stations of the Passion of Christ, transforming the entire Castle Village into an open-air theatre.
The procession begins at the Church of San Rocco, located at the foot of the walls, and then winds up the narrow streets of the historic center to the heart of the village. The detailed sets, period costumes, and careful direction guide the spectator through the main stages of the Via Crucis, up to the ascent to Calvary. Moments of silence, discreet music, and the flickering flames create a solemnity that combines spirituality and local history. The cold and wind of the spring evening often make the performance even more intense.
The re-enactment boasts a tradition of over fifty years and is now curated by the Pro Loco of Montegridolfo, active since 1991, in collaboration with the parish, local associations, and with the patronage of the Municipality. The event involves about a hundred participants from the town and surrounding areas and has established itself as one of the main events in the religious and cultural calendar of the Valconca.
Perched on the border between Emilia-Romagna and Marche, Montegridolfo is a perfectly preserved fortified village, with gates, towers, and walkways that serve as a natural backdrop for the re-enactment. The Via Crucis is the ideal opportunity to discover this corner of the Rimini hinterland, amidst the hills of the Valconca, a few kilometers from the Adriatic coast.
The thirty-fifth edition of the Re-enactment of the Via Crucis of Montegridolfo took place on Friday, April 3, 2026, Good Friday, starting at 9:00 PM. As per tradition, the village's public lighting was turned off, and the entire route was entrusted solely to the light of torches, braziers, and candles.
The procession began at the Church of San Rocco, at the foot of the walls, and then wound through the streets of the historic center with about a hundred figures in period costume who retraced the stages of the Passion of Christ to Calvary. The event, with free admission, was organized by the Pro Loco of Montegridolfo with the patronage of the Municipality.
