The ring joust and the Palio of the five districts in the medieval village of Sannio
The Historical Quintana of Melizzano is one of the most distinctive re-enactments in the Benevento area of Sannio. It takes place in Melizzano, a small town of just over 1,600 inhabitants in the Province of Benevento, in the Campania Region, situated at an altitude of about 190 meters between the Telesina Valley and the slopes of Mount Taburno. For four days, the village streets are transformed: workshops, taverns, encampments, and games transport the town back to its medieval roots, with a level of attention to costumes and staging that is the result of months of work by the districts and volunteers.
The heart of the event is the Palio della Quintana, the classic ring joust. Knights, armed with lances and at a full gallop, must spear a ring held by a papier-mรขchรฉ puppet representing a Saracen: with each pass, the ring gets smaller, and the final round determines the winner. Competing are the five districts of Melizzano, vying for the Palio banner:
The assignment of knights to the districts takes place via a draw shortly before the competition, during the ceremony that concludes the parade: it is one of the most engaging moments, as the hopes of each district depend on that draw.
On Sunday afternoon, the village fills up for the grand historical parade: hundreds of participants in period costumes walk through the town streets accompanied by flag-wavers, archers, and arquebusiers. In 2026, the flag-wavers of the City of Narni and the Pistonieri Santa Maria del Rovo of Cava de' Tirreni performed, with their blank shots marking the procession's progress. It is the scenic prelude to the Palio, which takes place immediately after, in the glow of sunset.
The natural backdrop for the Quintana is the Caracciolo d'Aquara castle, the medieval fortress with Ghibelline battlements that dominates Piazza Roma, the town's main square. Surrounding the castle is a historic center of alleys, arches, and cellars carved into the tuff, which become meeting places during the event: some host tastings of local olive oil, wine, and traditional sweets.
The medieval taverns set up by the districts are an essential part of the festival. They open every evening and serve dishes from the peasant cuisine of Sannio, accompanied by wines from the Telesina Valley, one of the most renowned wine-growing areas in Campania. Melizzano is also historically linked to apple production, even mentioned by Eduardo De Filippo in the play De Pretore Vincenzo, where the protagonist hails from the village.
Presented at the Rocca dei Rettori in Benevento, the 2026 edition marked the return of the Quintana after a three-year break. From July 9 to 12, the event featured medieval games, the "baptism of the saddle" (first-time riding experience), award ceremonies, concerts in Piazza Roma, and the Vespagiro, the motorcycle rally now in its twenty-sixth year, culminating in the Palio on Sunday, July 12. The public success confirmed that the re-enactment remains one of the most cherished identity-defining events for the Melizzano community.
The Historical Quintana is usually held between late June and the first half of July, lasting four or five days. It is a village-scale event: those who arrive early find parking more easily and can visit the historic center at a leisurely pace before the streets fill up for the parade and the joust.
Presented at the Rocca dei Rettori in Benevento, the 2026 edition brought the Historical Quintana back to Melizzano after three years of absence, with a calendar that started as early as July 6 with sports tournaments at the Torello sports area and concluded on Sunday the 12th with the Palio della Quintana.
During the four main days, the village hosted medieval games, the baptism of the saddle, the district taverns, and two evenings of music in Piazza Roma. On Sunday, the grand historical parade crossed the town with participants in period costumes, the flag-wavers of the City of Narni, and the Pistonieri Santa Maria del Rovo of Cava de' Tirreni; immediately after, the knights of the Rimembranza, Starza, Tiglio, Torello, and Valle Corrado districts competed in the ring joust. The event recorded a large public turnout, confirming itself as one of the most cherished identity-defining events in the Benevento Sannio area.
Melizzano is located in the Telesina Valley, less than thirty kilometers from Benevento and just over forty from Caserta. It is easily reached by car via the valley roads; the nearest train station is Telese Terme-Cerreto Sannita, from where you can continue by car or taxi. The reference airports are Naples-Capodichino and, further away, Rome-Fiumicino.
The historic center is clustered around Piazza Roma: it is very busy during the evenings of the Quintana, so it is advisable to arrive early and leave your car in the outer areas of the town.
There are no entrance fees for the historical parade and the Palio, which take place in the public spaces of the village. Taverns, tastings, and food/drink are paid for on-site.
Wear comfortable shoes: the alleys are uphill and the ground is often paved. Sunday is the most intense day, with the grand parade in the afternoon and the Palio in the evening: it is the day to choose if you can only visit once.
