The ancient Holy Week procession that prepares the Turba
The Historical Procession of Cantiano is one of the most evocative religious traditions of the hinterland of the Marche region. It takes place in the Municipality of Cantiano, in the Province of Pesaro and Urbino, along the medieval streets of the historic center, on the Saturday before Good Friday. It is the first, solemn chapter of Cantiano's Holy Week, the "appetizer" that prepares the village for the grand sacred representation of the Turba, scheduled for the following Friday.
The procession has its roots in the 17th century: it historically accompanied the procession of the dead Christ, with a large number of participants. The memory of this tradition is also preserved in the documents of local confraternities, linked to the devotion and representation of the Passion that has characterized Cantiano for centuries. Today, the procession retains its ancient and solemn character, capable of transforming the village into an open-air theater.
Along the streets of the historic center, a sequence of characters in costume from the Old and New Testaments parades, whose function is to symbolically open a "door" to fully experience Holy Week. Among the most recognizable figures are John the Baptist, the resurrected Lazarus, the apostles, and the four evangelists. Alongside them march the confraternities with their banners, large lanterns, and scourges, elements that convey the austere and penitential atmosphere of the rite.
Some confraternities from the nearby towns of Cagli, Gubbio, and Pergola also participate in the procession: a presence that recalls the solidarity received from neighboring populations in the days following the tragic flood of September 2022, but which also serves as an element of cultural aggregation for an entire Apennine territory, straddling the Marche and Umbria regions.
The procession begins in Piazza del Mercato and, after crossing the main streets of the historic center, concludes in Piazza Luceoli, the heart of the town. Here, the cross is erected, which the following week will be carried by the figure of Christ on his journey to Calvary during the Turba. The square itself thus becomes the ideal point of connection between the two events of Cantiano's Holy Week.
The historic sacred songs, entrusted in particular to the Miserere Choir of Gubbio, which performs ancient melodies in the village churches, from San Nicolรฒ to Sant'Ubaldo, further intensify the evening. The bond between Cantiano and Gubbio, born from the friendship between the communities, has accompanied this moment of reflection for decades, often experienced in a winter setting with the snow-capped Monte Catria in the background.
Promoted by the Cultural Association La Turba, the Historical Procession is not just a religious rite, but also an occasion for strong identity for Cantiano and the entire Catria and Nerone area. A free and deeply felt event, which every year attracts residents, devotees, and curious visitors eager to discover one of the most authentic pages of Holy Week in the Marche region.
The 2026 edition of the Historical Procession of Cantiano was held on Saturday, March 28th, one week before the Good Friday Turba (April 3rd). The procession started at 9:30 PM from Piazza del Mercato and, after crossing the medieval streets of the historic center, concluded at 10:30 PM in Piazza Luceoli, where the cross was erected for the following week's performance.
Costumed characters from the Old and New Testaments paraded โ including John the Baptist, the resurrected Lazarus, the apostles, and the four evangelists โ along with confraternities with banners, large lanterns, and scourges, and groups from Cagli, Gubbio, and Pergola. The evening was enhanced by the historic songs of the Miserere Choir of Gubbio, directed by Professor Franco Salciarini, performed in the churches of San Nicolรฒ and Sant'Ubaldo, with the snow-capped Monte Catria as a backdrop.
The 2026 Historical Procession took place on a single evening, Saturday, March 28th:
Sacred songs by the Miserere Choir of Gubbio (director Franco Salciarini) in the churches of San Nicolรฒ and Sant'Ubaldo. Confraternities from Cagli, Gubbio, and Pergola participated.
