About Gulf Carnival

The Gulf Carnival is the grand masquerade festival of the Gulf of Policastro. Featuring multiple events spread across Sapri and Policastro Bussentino, the festival showcases allegorical floats, masquerade groups, and individual costumes parading through the town streets to the seafront, accompanied by music, confetti, and children's entertainment. Organized by the local Pro Loco associations, the event features a competition for local creations, complete with a jury, awards, and the traditional burning of the Befana. Admission is free.

The Gulf Carnival, the masquerade festival of the Gulf of Policastro

Every winter, the Gulf Carnival transforms Sapri, at the southern tip of the province of Salerno, into a massive open-air stage. The event is not limited to a single day: it is a true circuit of parades that unites Sapri and Policastro Bussentino, a hamlet of the municipality of Santa Marina, the two towns overlooking the Gulf of Policastro that have shared this carnival tradition for years. Allegorical floats, masquerade groups, and individual costumes parade through the streets of both towns down to the seafront, where music, dancing, and award ceremonies take place.

Organizers and participation

The event is organized by the Gulf Pro Loco associations: the Pro Loco of Sapri, led by president Luana Ficarra, and the Pro Loco Buxentum of Policastro Bussentino. The municipalities of Sapri and Santa Marina support the initiative, which has become the most anticipated winter event in this corner of Campania on the border with Basilicata.

Participation is open to everyone: spontaneous groups, parishes, schools, and local associations from the gulf towns can register their float or group with either of the two organizing Pro Loco offices. A jury evaluates the entries based on three criteria — originality, theme, and choreography — and awards prizes for the best allegorical float, best masquerade group, and best individual costume.

Floats and groups from across the region

The strength of the Gulf Carnival lies in the network of towns it brings together: communities from Policastro, Santa Marina, Torraca, Lentiscosa, and other gulf centers take part in the parades, creating a procession that featured about ten represented towns in the 2026 edition. Alongside the most impressive floats, dozens of costumed groups parade with themes ranging from animated films to Venetian masks, and from the Far West to fairy tales.

  • Allegorical floats built over the previous months by groups of volunteers and local master craftsmen
  • Masquerade groups with meticulously planned choreography and music
  • Individual costumes and children's masks, with a section dedicated to the little ones
  • Children's entertainment, animation, and dancing in the square

The route in Sapri and Policastro

In Sapri, the gathering takes place in Piazza Plebiscito: from there, the procession heads down Corso Italia and the main streets of the town, ending on the Lungomare Italia, where the awards stage is set up. In Policastro Bussentino, the meeting point for floats and groups is the sports field; the parade crosses the town and the festivities conclude in the municipal villa with music and shows until evening.

The burning of the Befana

The most characteristic closing ritual is the burning of the Befana, the puppet incinerated on Via Carlo Pisacane in Sapri, accompanied by a final toast with the locals: a farewell to winter that blends southern carnival tradition with the joy of a public celebration. It is no coincidence that one of the historic groups of the event is the "Befane" of Via Carlo Pisacane, which has been awarded multiple times.

Why it's worth the trip

In a territory known primarily for its summer seaside season, the Gulf Carnival brings intense public life back to Sapri and the lower Cilento region, even in the heart of winter. It is a popular, self-produced carnival, without large budgets but with extremely high participation: families from the area spend weeks working on the floats, and the seafronts fill with people. For those visiting the municipality of Sapri and the Campania region out of season, it is the perfect opportunity to see the gulf in its most authentic dimension, amidst local dialect, cuisine, and shared joy.

Gulf Carnival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Gulf Carnival was spread over several Sundays between Sapri and Policastro Bussentino. The initial calendar planned for an opening on February 8 in Policastro, but bad weather forced the postponement of that stage to February 22. The event thus kicked off in Sapri on Sunday, February 15, continued on February 17 with the children's masks and the burning of the Befana, and reached its final parade on March 1 on the Sapri seafront. The "Oceania" float by the Amici del Carnevale di Policastro triumphed.

A three-week-long edition

The 2026 Gulf Carnival had a busy calendar. The Pro Loco associations of Sapri and Buxentum had announced three events — February 8 in Policastro Bussentino, February 15 in Sapri, and February 17, Shrove Tuesday, again in Sapri — but weather conditions forced the postponement of the Policastro stage to February 22, with the final parade held on Sunday, March 1, along the Lungomare Italia.

Ten towns in the procession

About ten communities from the gulf paraded during the Policastro stage, with themed groups including Harry Potter, Far West, Madagascar, hippies, Polynesians, and the historic Befane. The float from Torraca dedicated to the orchestra of maestro Vessicchio, featuring a piano mounted on a bicycle and "walking" armchairs, was among the most photographed creations.

The awards

The final verdict, announced on the seafront stage in Sapri, crowned the "Oceania" float, a work inspired by the Disney film created by the Amici del Carnevale di Policastro. Among the allegorical groups, "La Befana vien da Carlo Pisacane" from Sapri won. The "I 4 elementi" (Air, Water, Earth, Fire) group from Santa Marina was awarded for the best mask, and the Venetian Masks of Lentiscosa were recognized as the best group during the Policastro stage.
