About Air Raid Shelter

For Republic Day, Ponte San Pietro opens its WWII air raid shelters to the public. The guided tour, in Piazza della Libertà, takes visitors to discover the bunkers dug to protect the population from the Allied bombings of July 1944, recounting the evolution of the war industry and military aeronautics. An opportunity to rediscover a little-known chapter of local history, in the Isola Bergamasca, in the province of Bergamo.

The Bunkers of Memory

Every June 2nd, on the occasion of the Republic Day, the Municipality of Ponte San Pietro opens the WWII air raid shelters to the public with a free guided tour. The meeting point is Piazza della Libertà, in the center of the town of Isola Bergamasca, in the province of Bergamo.

A Chapter of Local History

The tour retraces the history of these shelters, dug to protect the population from the Allied bombings of July 1944, addressing topics such as the evolution of the war industry and military aeronautics. The bunkers are located at street level, without stairs or significant differences in elevation, and tell up close the fears and survival strategies of a community in wartime.

An Opportunity to Remember

Included among the events for June 2nd, the guided tour is an initiative to enhance local historical heritage that combines memory and knowledge. For Ponte San Pietro, it is a way to link the republican anniversary to the rediscovery of a place that holds the history of the 20th century and the memory of the country's most difficult years.
