Nembro celebrates the 4th centenary of Enea Salmeggia, il Talpino
Salmeggia 400 is the cultural review with which Nembro, a municipality in the Province of Bergamo in the Seriana Valley, celebrates the fourth centenary of the death of Enea Salmeggia (circa 1565 โ 1626), a painter known as 'il Talpino' and one of the most important figures in 17th-century Lombard art. Salmeggia was born in Salmezza, a hamlet of Nembro, and his devotional painting profoundly marked the churches in the Bergamo area.
The project, promoted by the Municipality of Nembro together with the Fondazione Adriano Bernareggi, with the contribution of Fondazione Creberg and numerous associations and parishes, aims to 'restore centrality to the artist's figure'. For this reason, it is structured into a multi-month calendar that intertwines moments of study, field experiences, and festive occasions: art history conferences, an orchestral concert, guided itineraries through the museums and churches of Bergamo and the valley, cultural walks, and a concluding exhibition.
The common thread is the rediscovery of Salmeggia's places: from the churches that house his altarpieces to the paths connecting Nembro to the Sanctuary of Zuccarello, up to Salmeggia's native village. The review is an opportunity to get to know not only an artist but also a territory โ the Seriana Valley โ through the eyes of someone who depicted it with his brush four centuries ago.
In 2026, Salmeggia 400 celebrates the 4th centenary of Enea Salmeggia's death with a review that runs from February until the summer. Promoted by the Municipality of Nembro and the Fondazione Adriano Bernareggi, it includes art history conferences, a concert by the Enea Salmeggia Orchestra, presentations and guided tours in churches, urban itineraries through the museums and churches of Bergamo, walks along Salmeggia's paths, and a concluding exhibition. The events take place in various venues between Nembro, Bergamo, and the Seriana Valley.
