About Gressoney-Saint-Jean Carnival

In Gressoney-Saint-Jean, the Carnival follows the Ambrosian rite and spans several days: family and children's entertainment at Villa Deslex, an evening in the square with a DJ at Obre Platz, and traditional outdoor games in the historic center. A celebration that brings color and joy to the Walser village at the foot of Monte Rosa, an Orange Flag of the Touring Club.

The Carnival of the Walser Village

Gressoney-Saint-Jean, an elegant village in the upper Lys Valley awarded the Orange Flag by the Touring Club, celebrates Carnival according to the Ambrosian calendar—the Milanese one, which extends celebrations beyond Shrove Tuesday. This peculiarity is linked to the history of this German-speaking Walser community, guardians of their own dialect and unique traditions in the Alps.

A Multi-Day Celebration

The Gressoney-Saint-Jean Carnival features several events designed for all ages:

  • Entertainment for families and children, with costumes, colors, and games organized by professional entertainers, at Villa Deslex
  • An après-ski style evening at Obre Platz, with a DJ, music, and dancing
  • Traditional outdoor games in the historic center, with challenges and activities that revive the pastimes of yesteryear

More Than a Costume Party

Part of the broader Gressoney Walser Festival calendar, which combines music, culture, theater, tradition, sports, nature, and local flavors, the Carnival is one of the moments that best showcase the welcoming spirit of this mountain town. A joyful and family-friendly event in the heart of the Monterosa ski area, in the province of Aosta.
