Great Bonfire of the Giöbia of Fagnano Olona

An ancient ritual of the Olona Valley

The Gran Falò della Giöbia is a tradition deeply rooted in the popular culture of the Olona Valley and celebrated in Fagnano Olona, a municipality in the province of Varese. The "Giöbia" (or Gioeübia) is a straw effigy that, according to custom, is burned to drive away winter, difficulties, fears, and negative thoughts: the bonfire thus becomes a collective moment of sharing, community, and warmth.

The festival in Piazza della Repubblica

The event, organized by Pro Loco Fagnano Olona APS, takes place in Piazza della Repubblica (the historic Piazza Mercato). The afternoon is marked by music, with the performance of the Town Band, and the flavours of Lombard tradition: risotto with luganega, polenta, and bruscitt, a typical dish from the Alto Milanese area made with shredded beef. The great bonfire of the Giöbia concludes the day, in an atmosphere that unites entire families around the fire.

Tradition and community

In Fagnano Olona, the Giöbia has always been the precursor to the many celebrations that liven up the Olona Valley at the end of January. It is an event that goes beyond a simple festival: it is an identity moment for the community, capable of renewing the bond with the agricultural roots of the Varese territory year after year. Often, the bonfire is dedicated to a theme (such as peace), giving the tradition a current and participatory meaning.
