About Gravinae Nativitas

Every winter, the Fondovito district in Gravina in Puglia transforms into an ancient Bethlehem: Gravinae Nativitas is a living nativity scene featuring ancient crafts that brings the alleys, caves, and the rock-hewn church of San Michele delle Grotte to life. Over 150 costumed performers recreate artisan workshops, scenes of daily life, Herod's court, and the arrival of the Magi, set against the backdrop of a Roman camp and traditional sounds. A journey back in time, with free admission, in the heart of the Apulian Murgia.

An ancient Bethlehem in the heart of the Murgia

During the Christmas season, the historic center of Gravina in Puglia, in the province of Bari, transforms into a grand open-air stage. Gravinae Nativitas – Ancient Crafts in the Nativity Scene is a living nativity that transports the Fondovito district—also known as the Piaggio district—back in time. Amidst stairways carved into the tufa rock, courtyards, and caves, dozens of animated scenes reconstruct life from two thousand years ago surrounding the Nativity. It is not merely a religious representation, but a true choral narrative of the work, crafts, and customs of the past.

The Fondovito district and the rock-hewn church of San Michele delle Grotte

The route winds through the ancient Fondovito district, one of the most evocative areas of Gravina, leading to the rock-hewn church of San Michele delle Grotte, a symbolic landmark of the city carved directly into the rock. The caves and narrow alleys become the natural backdrop for the nativity: each space hosts a different scene, illuminated by fires and lanterns, creating an atmosphere that fully immerses visitors as they walk along the path. Gravina, a candidate for the Italian Capital of Culture 2028 and part of the UNESCO Global Geopark of the Alta Murgia, thus showcases its rich historical and landscape heritage.

Ancient crafts and nativity scenes

Over 150 costumed performers bring the story to life. Alongside the Nativity scene with Mary and Joseph, visitors will encounter:

  • ancient craft workshops, featuring reconstructions of historical tools and laboratories;
  • the market and scenes of popular life;
  • Herod's court and the ritual of the goddess Vesta;
  • the Roman legionary camp and hunting grounds, featuring animals such as wolves and birds of prey;
  • the grand procession and the arrival of the Magi, the highlight of the event.

A rapidly growing event

Established in 2022, Gravinae Nativitas has quickly become one of the most popular Christmas events in Puglia: the third edition, in the winter of 2024-2025, exceeded 40,000 visitors. The event has joined the Italian Network of Living Nativity Scenes and involves local associations, artisans, and volunteers every year.

Organizers

The event is promoted by the Municipal Administration of Gravina in Puglia in partnership with the Apulia Region and the Diocese of Altamura-Gravina-Acquaviva delle Fonti, in collaboration with the Corteo Storico Montfort, Passio Christi, the CIM, the Alta Murgia National Park, Confartigianato, the Ente Pro Loco Puglia, and Puglia Promozione.

Gravinae Nativitas — edition 2026

The fourth edition of Gravinae Nativitas brought the Fondovito district of Gravina in Puglia to life during the weekends of December 6-7, 2025, and January 4-5, 2026. The living nativity of ancient crafts, featuring over 150 performers, reconstructed workshops, scenes of daily life, Herod's court, and the Roman camp, concluding with the highly anticipated arrival of the Magi.

The 2025-2026 edition, the fourth of the event, confirmed Gravinae Nativitas as one of the most visited living nativity scenes in Puglia. The route in the Fondovito district, leading to the rock-hewn church of San Michele delle Grotte, featured traditional Nativity scenes alongside the ritual of the goddess Vesta, Herod's court, the market, and the Roman legionary camp with animals such as wolves and birds of prey. The edition was also dedicated to the UNESCO Global Geopark recognition of the Alta Murgia. Free admission, with the option to book a skip-the-line ticket online.
