The great cross-border parade of floats and masks
In Gorizia, Carnival is a celebration that knows no borders. For decades, Pro Loco Gorizia, with the support of the Municipality, has organised one of the city's most colourful events: the grand parade of allegorical floats and masked groups that crosses the historic centre, with thousands of masks also arriving from neighbouring Slovenia and the Karst region. Two bilingual speakers, in Italian and Slovenian, accompany the procession, highlighting the cross-border vocation of this border festival.
The procession is the heart of the event: dozens of associations, including allegorical floats and walking groups, parade along the city streets to Piazza Vittoria, amidst music, confetti, and costumes. The Gorizia parade has always been an occasion for the Italian and Slovenian communities to meet, in a atmosphere of popular celebration that fills the city streets.
Alongside the main parade, the Children's Carnival is dedicated to the youngest, with games, entertainment, and masks designed for families. A more intimate and joyful moment, making the Gorizia Carnival a celebration for all ages.
Concluding the festivities is the most spectacular and ironic tradition: the Funeral of King Carnival, the ritual that marks the end of the festival and the beginning of Lent. Amidst mock solemnity and cheerfulness, the city bids farewell to the Carnival sovereign, looking forward to the following year.
The 36th edition of the Gorizia Carnival enlivens the historic centre throughout February 2026. The highlight is the grand parade on Sunday, February 8th, featuring 12 floats and 18 masked groups, for a total of approximately 2,000 participants arriving also from Slovenia and the Karst region, accompanied by two bilingual speakers. This is followed by the Children's Carnival and the traditional Funeral of King Carnival.
How to get there: Gorizia is reachable by car from the A4 motorway (Villesse-Gorizia exit) and by train from Gorizia Centrale station. Some public transport stops are suspended during the parade.
