The Middle Ages return to the gates of Rome

The Giostra della Mezzaluna, established in 2025 as the Giostra del Tempo, is the grand medieval historical re-enactment of Castel di Guido, a village in the Roman countryside located within Rome's XIII Municipality. For three days, the grounds of the Castel di Guido Agricultural Estate transform into a 14th-century encampment, complete with costumed performers, ancient trades, and displays of chivalric skill, just a few kilometers from the Grande Raccordo Anulare.

The Battle of Lorium and the four districts

At the heart of the event is the re-enactment of the Battle of Lorium, an episode linked to the ancient Roman statio of Lorium that once stood along the Via Aurelia and still defines the area's historical identity today. This narrative frames the challenge of the four districts—Borgo, Neviani, Aurelio, and Gismondi—who face off in the Knights' Challenge, an equestrian tournament that crowns a single winning district.

A program for all ages

The festival balances spectacular displays with educational activities: military camps, ancient craft workshops, archery, horseback riding experiences, live-action role-playing, historical pageants, and evenings featuring folk concerts and fire shows. Cultural and naturalistic offerings are also available, thanks to collaborations with INAF for archaeoastronomy lectures and the LIPU of Castel di Guido for guided tours of the nature reserve.

An event rooted in the territory

The event is organized by the Lorium Association, founded by the residents of Castel di Guido to revive local traditions, from the Feast of Saint Anthony to the Palio della Mezzaluna. Admission is free, offering locals and visitors alike a charming medieval getaway that blends history, nature, and community in the Lazio Region.
