Three days in the Middle Ages in Castel di Guido, featuring the Battle of Lorium and the challenge of the four districts
The Giostra della Mezzaluna, established in 2025 as the Giostra del Tempo, is the grand medieval historical re-enactment of Castel di Guido, a village in the Roman countryside located within Rome's XIII Municipality. For three days, the grounds of the Castel di Guido Agricultural Estate transform into a 14th-century encampment, complete with costumed performers, ancient trades, and displays of chivalric skill, just a few kilometers from the Grande Raccordo Anulare.
At the heart of the event is the re-enactment of the Battle of Lorium, an episode linked to the ancient Roman statio of Lorium that once stood along the Via Aurelia and still defines the area's historical identity today. This narrative frames the challenge of the four districtsโBorgo, Neviani, Aurelio, and Gismondiโwho face off in the Knights' Challenge, an equestrian tournament that crowns a single winning district.
The festival balances spectacular displays with educational activities: military camps, ancient craft workshops, archery, horseback riding experiences, live-action role-playing, historical pageants, and evenings featuring folk concerts and fire shows. Cultural and naturalistic offerings are also available, thanks to collaborations with INAF for archaeoastronomy lectures and the LIPU of Castel di Guido for guided tours of the nature reserve.
The event is organized by the Lorium Association, founded by the residents of Castel di Guido to revive local traditions, from the Feast of Saint Anthony to the Palio della Mezzaluna. Admission is free, offering locals and visitors alike a charming medieval getaway that blends history, nature, and community in the Lazio Region.
The second edition animated Castel di Guido from June 5 to 7, 2026, confirming the formula inaugurated the previous year with the Giostra del Tempo. Organized by the Lorium Association, it offered three days of free-entry re-enactment on the grounds of the Castel di Guido Agricultural Estate, in Rome's XIII Municipality.
The event was supported by INAF, LIPU of Castel di Guido, the Cornelia Antiqua Association, and the musicians of Castel Madama.
The event takes place at the Castel di Guido Agricultural Estate, at Via Gaetano Sodini 59, in the western sector of Rome. By car, take the Via Aurelia (SS1) from the Grande Raccordo Anulare towards Fregene, exiting at Castel di Guido. Ample parking is available on the estate grounds.
Cotral bus connections from Rome serve the Castel di Guido area; however, given its location in the Roman countryside, traveling by car is recommended.
Admission is free. Refreshment areas, medieval taverns, and food stalls are available on-site. The event is family-friendly; since many activities take place outdoors, comfortable footwear is recommended.
